Field Air General Manager Stephen Holding spoke to Brett Macdonald on 3BA 102.3 FM Ballarat Today this week about the Ballarat Airport Stage 2 runway upgrade - and the importance of upgrading this infrastructure for the benefit of the wider Ballarat and surrounding community.

Stage 2 would rebuild the remaining 1,250m of the main runway, some sections of which currently date back to World War 2.

It was a great few days at AFAC26 in Melbourne this week. Good to catch up with some familiar faces and meet a few new ones at Stand 508 - it's always interesting seeing the wide variety of innovations and services within this space, this year was no different.

It was also great to have Mike Benson Director of Business Development from Conair join us this year. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to chat.

Canola season means low-flying aircraft working paddocks across the country - often as low as 10ft off the ground and moving fast. If you're out flying a drone to get photos of the yellow fields, a few things to keep in mind:

Ag aircraft can appear with very little warning, and at those speeds a small drone is extremely hard for a pilot to spot in time. Keep your drone well away from any aircraft, stay within visual line of sight, and if you see or hear one approaching, land straight away.

Our Cessna 208B Grand Caravan, usually out touring with our friends at Kirkhope Aviation on their air safari flights, is currently at Ballarat for scheduled maintenance.

Powered by a Pratt & Whitney PT6A turboprop, it carries up to 9 passengers and a 1,590+ kg of payload, cruising at up to 340 km/h with a range of around 1,670 km. Fitted with the cargo pod, spacious leather seating and large cabin windows, it's built for both comfort and capability.

It's been a busy July for our Operations team in Deni, Finley and Ballarat. Wet conditions have kept the team flat out top dressing and spraying ahead of sclerotinia in the canola.

It was great to have City of Ballarat's CEO Evan King, alongside Mayor Hargreaves, councillors and council officers at Ballarat Airport recently, as part of ongoing discussions on the airport's future.

The visit follows council's push for the $14.35 million stage two runway upgrade - a Tier 1 project in the City's Priority Projects Pipeline. The works would rebuild the original WWII-era section of the runway and bring it up to modern standards.

Ballarat Airport has seen strong momentum over the past two years, with new tenant Interair relocating its maintenance operations from Essendon.

The upgrade is the missing piece - not just for aviation growth, but for emergency response and health services, with an upgraded strip able to support larger aircraft for medical transfers and firefighting.

That's a wrap! Thanks to everyone who stopped by the Field Air booth at the Aerial Fire Fighting Asia-Pacific 2026 Trade Show on the Gold Coast. It was great connecting with old friends and new faces across the industry and hearing firsthand how the fire season is shaping up across the region.
