Gibb River Road – Day 1

Stayed last night at Birdwood Downs Station with a good old-fashioned burger night for dinner.

This morning we left the van behind and hit the Gibb proper.

First stop was Tunnel Creek National Park for the subterranean walk through the cave system — and no crocs in sight.

From there we pushed on to set up camp at Windjana Gorge Campground. After lunch we headed into Windjana Gorge National Park itself for a walk through the gorge — and spotted two crocs cruising the waterholes.

Two completely different experiences in a single day, both absolutely incredible.

Now it’s time to settle in, kick back, and enjoy a couple of cold ones under the Kimberley sky.

Another great day exploring Broome! 🏃‍♂️

Went for a run out to Gantheaume Point and then on to Coconut Wells. The scenery along the way was absolutely stunning, with the red cliffs, turquoise water and endless coastline making every kilometre worthwhile.

Finished it off with a refreshing swim in the lagoon at Coconut Wells. What an incredible spot and a perfect way to cool down after the run.

Last night I finally got to see the famous Stairway to the Moon, and what a sight it was! 🌕✨

The best part? I didn’t even have to go anywhere — I watched it right out the back of my campsite overlooking Roebuck Bay. Seeing the moon rise and create that incredible shimmering staircase across the water was something pretty special.

One of those iconic Broome experiences that definitely lives up to the hype.

78. Broome Part 1
After 24 days and more than 7,000 kilometres on the road from Melbourne, it’s finally time to slow down and explore Broome.

In this episode I spend my first week discovering some of the highlights this iconic Kimberley town has to offer. From the turquoise waters and white sands of Cable Beach to a visit to the busy Port of Broome, there’s plenty to see and do.

I also head north to the famous Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm to learn about the region’s pearling history before jumping aboard a high-speed adventure out to the spectacular Reef Waterfall.

Join me as I begin my Broome adventure and experience some of the best sights this unique part of Western Australia has to offer.

Big day today heading up to Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, about 2 hours north of Broome.

Started the day with a tour of the pearl farm learning all about the history and process behind the famous Kimberley pearls. Then in the afternoon it was time for some adventure with a trip out to the Waterfall Reef in a large RIB.

What an awesome day and absolutely worth the visit. The Kimberley coastline never disappoints.

Made it to Broome and this is home for the next couple of weeks. After 7000+ kilometres on the road it’s time to slow down a bit, kick back and relax in one spot for a while.

This time I’m staying at a caravan park right on Roebuck Bay with a waterfront site — not a bad place to pull up for a while. Looking forward to sunsets, warm weather and exploring everything Broome has to offer before heading off on the Gibb.

78. Melbourne to Broome Part 4 🚐☀️
The final instalment of my Melbourne to Broome journey is here.

This leg of the trip took me through Katherine, across the WA border, past the Ord River, through Halls Creek and Fitzroy Crossing before finally rolling into Broome.

Along the way I stayed at some awesome free camps, covered huge distances and experienced some incredible outback scenery.

24 days on the road, over 7000 kilometres travelled, and finally made it to Broome. What an adventure.

Found an awesome overnight camp on WikiCamps last night. The owners of Ellendale Station allow free overnight camping on the lake inside their property, only about 100m off the road. Such a picturesque spot to pull up for the night.

Rolling into Broome today and officially reaching the end of the Melbourne to Broome trip. Time to settle down for a couple of weeks, relax a bit, and get everything ready to tackle the Gibb River Road next.
