Been contacted by a supporter today who owns the container that has the sign below on it. An official from Albury Council has been in touch requesting that the sign is removed. The email doesn’t say there is anything wrong with having political signs up per se, but that it doesn’t meet their specifications!
The supporter in question is challenging this and is determined to keep it up! Interestingly, when there was a similar development in Victoria a few years ago, the High Court actually found against the council due to the importance of political communication. Surely there’re better uses of ratepayers’ money than fighting something like this in court?
I do find it peculiar that the Council is seeking to take action now when it has been up for weeks, right in the middle of the most important phase of the campaign. I also find it peculiar that they’ve requested that this sign be taken down, yet apparently campaign attack ads against One Nation on community notice boards are okay.
It’s very important during important elections that councils behave in a way that is proportionate, fair-minded and even-handed. The risk here for them is that it looks far from it?
