One of our most favourite time of the year in the Whitsundays when humpback whales in record numbers come up to give birth to their young. And we are using our new hydrophone - throw it overboard to five metres and it captures all these amazing sounds these marine animals make.
And we can play it to our guests and then upload it to a research project at the University of Queensland focusing on whalesong.
We met Genevieve, who helped us understand how to use the hydrophone. She confessed that after spending years on a PhD on whalesong is still figuring out what they might be saying.
Such complex animals and apparently females don’t have menopause and keep giving birth until they die.
Oh and thanks to Simon, one of our most recent guests, who shared this footage with us.
