📍 Stanley, Tasmania

There’s something special about Stanley as the day starts winding down. 🌅

The light softens, the water picks up those beautiful reflections, and the whole waterfront seems to settle into a quieter rhythm.

We captured these as we wandered later in the day, when the streets were calmer and the colours over the water kept changing from one minute to the next.

It was one of those lovely moments where we weren’t really chasing anything in particular, just enjoying the view and stopping whenever the light looked too good to ignore. 📸❤️

📍 Stanley, Tasmania

One of the things we loved about wandering through Stanley was how much character was tucked into the streets themselves.

Old weatherboard cottages, heritage shopfronts, the Town Hall, little architectural details and buildings that have clearly seen plenty of Stanley life pass by their doors. Some are beautifully restored, some wear their age a little more proudly, and together they give the town so much personality. ❤️

We found ourselves stopping constantly for “just one more photo” as we wandered. 📸

Stanley really is one of those places where the streets are just as interesting as the big attractions.

📍 The Angel’s Share, Stanley

This beautiful old building really caught our eye as we wandered through town.

Once we stepped inside, we discovered there was a little more history to it. The owner told us the building was originally an old bank, which instantly made us look at it differently.

One of the most interesting details was learning about the old vault door, which was apparently compacted with sawdust to make it fireproof. We always love hearing little bits of history like that, because it gives an old building a whole new story.

These days, The Angel’s Share has been given a new life, but it still holds onto plenty of its old charm. We loved wandering through, taking in the character of the place and imagining the stories those walls could tell.

Stanley really does have a way of turning an ordinary wander into something memorable. 😃

STANLEY TOWN WALK – 3/3 🚶‍♀️🏘️

And just like that, we’re onto the final part of our favourite self-guided walk around Stanley. ❤️

Stops 11–15 took us to St James’ Presbyterian Church, Mary Bogue’s Grave, The Rectory, the old VDL Company Store and finally The Bond Store down near the waterfront.

There was such a mixture of stories through this section. Some fascinating, some a little more sombre, but each one adding another layer to Stanley’s history.

At every stop we could either read the story on the app or listen to the narrated version as we wandered, and that was definitely one of the things that made this walk so enjoyable for us. It felt less like following a tourist trail and more like having someone quietly telling us Stanley’s stories along the way. 🎧

Each stop also has a gallery in the app, so you can flick through even more photos while you follow the walk.

By the time we reached The Bond Store, we’d almost made our way back to where our Stanley wander began.

What a brilliant way to explore this beautiful little town. 😃❤️

STANLEY TOWN WALK – 2/3 🚶‍♀️🏘️

We’re continuing our favourite self-guided walk around Stanley, following the stories of Stanley-born writer and artist Meg Eldridge.

This part of the walk took us through Stops 6–10, beginning with the beautiful Church Street Shops, then on to the Plough Inn, St Paul’s Anglican Church, the Commercial Hotel and the old Burial Ground.

St Paul’s was surrounded by fencing and scaffolding while restoration work was underway, but luckily we still managed to get a good look at it.

One of the things we loved most about this walk was that it wasn’t just pointing out old buildings. At each stop, the app gives you the story to read or a narrated version to listen to as you wander, so it really felt like we were being guided through Stanley’s past.

Before long, we were looking at the streets and buildings completely differently.

STANLEY HERITAGE WALK 1/3 👣

Let’s take a closer look at Stanley through the eyes of one of its most cherished residents, Marguerite “Meg” Eldridge. ❤️

Of everything we did while exploring Stanley, the self-guided Stanley Heritage Walk was our favourite!!

The walk took us around the town to 15 different points of interest, uncovering some of Stanley’s history, buildings and stories along the way. It really felt like we were following Meg’s story from one stop to the next. 🥰

And this time, you can come along with us. 😃

📍 Hursey Seafoods, Stanley 🦞

Always on the hunt for a better scallop pie. 🥧🤣

Before exploring Stanley, we called into Hursey Seafoods to grab some takeaway for lunch and see if their famous scallop pies could challenge our current Tassie champion, Muddy Boots Cafe.

What started as a simple lunch order to eat in the park turned into a story we definitely weren’t expecting. 🤣

What did we order?

What was forgotten?

What was the surprise?

Who joined us for lunch?

And how did it all end? 🏆

Possibly in a way you wouldn’t expect. 😃

📍 Hursey Seafoods Restaurant, Stanley 🦞

Before we even got to the food, Hursey’s gave us plenty to look at. 😃

Heading upstairs to the restaurant felt a little like walking into a maritime museum.

The dark walls were covered with pieces of Stanley’s fishing history, old photographs, paintings, maps, cray pots, fishing gear and stories about the Hursey family and their fleet.

There was even a huge ship’s wheel taking pride of place between the windows. ⚓

Of course Brad had to stop and study the old map. 🤣

Then there were those big windows looking straight out across Stanley’s working harbour, a pretty fitting backdrop for a seafood restaurant whose story is so closely tied to the sea.

We could have spent quite a while just wandering around looking at everything.

But eventually there was the small matter of lunch. 🤣🦞

We’d actually come to Hursey Seafoods to check out their takeaway for lunch.

And that turned into a story of its own... 😃
