Austria Like a Local

Austria Like a Local Austria Like a Local is about real life in Austria beyond the tourist version.

I share what it’s actually like living in Austria as an expat mom, the culture, the systems, the food locals eat, family-friendly skiing, and the hidden gems.

What should you NOT miss if you’re visiting Austria in June? 😏🇦🇹

A few things I couldn’t fit into the video...

🔥 SONNWENDFEUER (around June 20–21)

Sonnwendfeuer is an ancient midsummer tradition celebrated across the Alpine region around the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.

Historically, the fires symbolized the triumph of light over darkness and were believed to drive away evil spirits while bringing fertility and a good harvest.

Today, the tradition lives on across Austria.
Most towns celebrate with bonfires.

But in places like Tirol, they take it to another level 😭

Entire mountains light up with giant crosses, hearts, symbols and drawings made entirely of fire.

Best places to see it:

📍Ehrwald (my personal favorite)
📍Tirol region
📍Zell am See
📍Saalfelden (Pinzgau)

Most towns celebrate Sonnwendfeuer in some form, usually with bonfires.

Check local tourism websites for exact dates and locations.

If you only pick one June event, I’d seriously consider this one.

🚤 HALLSTATT LAKE PROCESSION (Corpus Christi)

📅 June 4, 2026
⏰ Around 8:30–9:00 AM after the church service

Everyone talks about Hallstatt’s postcard views.

Almost nobody talks about this.

Decorated wooden boats cross the lake as part of a centuries-old religious procession while church bells echo through the mountains.

It’s one of the very few days I think Hallstatt is actually worth dealing with the crowds for 😭

⚠️ Arrive VERY early. Parking fills up fast.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 TRAVELING WITH KIDS?
Austria becomes unfair this time of year 😭
Some mountain playgrounds are honestly better than actual amusement parks.

📍 Prinzenberg Natrun (Hochkönig)
📍 Fichtenschloss (Zillertal)
📍 Murmliwasser (Serfaus)
📍 Schmidolin’s Adventure World (Schmittenhöhe)

🍓 ONE LAST THING

June is strawberry-picking season.
Look for signs saying:
“Erdbeeren selbst pflücken”

Austrians genuinely spend sunny afternoons picking their own strawberries and somehow make it look like the best day ever 😭

🔥🇦🇹Ever seen an entire mountain set on fire... on purpose?

If you’re visiting Austria in June, this is one of the most unique traditions you can experience.

On the weekend of June 20–21, mountains across Austria light up with hundreds of bonfires known as Sonnwendfeuer (Summer Solstice Fires).

From valleys below, you’ll see glowing fire lines, symbols, and giant flames stretching across mountain slopes.

It’s a tradition that goes back centuries and celebrates the summer solstice and the longest days of the year.

Some of the most impressive places to experience it include:

🏔️ Ehrwald and the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena
🏔️ The Nordkette above Innsbruck
🏔️ Mountain regions throughout Tyrol

But here’s the part most people don’t know...

This isn’t a festival happening in one square or one village.

The mountains themselves become the event.

You spend the evening watching the sunset over the Alps.

Then, as darkness falls, hundreds of fires begin appearing across the landscape.

And suddenly, the mountains are glowing.

It’s one of those Austrian experiences that feels almost unreal until you see it with your own eyes.

Planning Austria in June?

Don’t miss this one. 🔥

Have you ever heard of Sonnwendfeuer before?

People plan Austria trips like they’re collecting Pokémon cards 😭

Vienna ✔️
Hallstatt ✔️
Salzburg ✔️

Meanwhile Austria is sitting there like:
“you do realize the best parts are BETWEEN those places right?” 😏

Because nobody comes back from Austria talking about:
🚆 train stations
🧳 hotel check-ins
😭 or 6 hour day trips

They remember:
🏔️ the random mountain road
🌊 the lake they accidentally stopped at
🥨 the tiny village they almost skipped
😮‍💨 the cable car view they still think about months later

Austria is one of those countries that rewards people who leave space for the unexpected.

Agree or not?

Austria really said:
What if we made spring feel like a fantasy movie?

🌼🇦🇹The Narzissenfest is Austria’s biggest flower festival and happens every year in the Ausseerland region, surrounded by lakes and mountains in Styria.

📍 This year: Bad Aussee
📅 May 28–31
🌼 Main parade: Sunday, May 31

And one important detail ❗️

Usually the famous flower figures float across the lake on wooden boats…

BUT this year the parade will happen through the STREETS of Bad Aussee instead

The tradition started because the region becomes covered in wild white narcissus flowers every spring. Locals then build giant sculptures flower by flower, completely by hand.

You’ll experience:

🎺 brass bands
👗 traditional Austrian clothes
🌼 flower sculptures everywhere
🥨 food stands and local specialties
🏔️ one of the most ridiculously beautiful alpine settings in Austria

🚗 HOW TO GET THERE

Bad Aussee is around:
• 1h 30 from Salzburg
• 2h 30 from Vienna
• 1h 45 from Graz

You can go by:
🚆 train + bus
or
🚗 car (easier for exploring the lakes nearby)

And trust me…

THIS is the kind of Austria most tourists never even realize exists 😏
