What should you NOT miss if you’re visiting Austria in June? 😏🇦🇹
A few things I couldn’t fit into the video...
🔥 SONNWENDFEUER (around June 20–21)
Sonnwendfeuer is an ancient midsummer tradition celebrated across the Alpine region around the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.
Historically, the fires symbolized the triumph of light over darkness and were believed to drive away evil spirits while bringing fertility and a good harvest.
Today, the tradition lives on across Austria.
Most towns celebrate with bonfires.
But in places like Tirol, they take it to another level 😭
Entire mountains light up with giant crosses, hearts, symbols and drawings made entirely of fire.
Best places to see it:
📍Ehrwald (my personal favorite)
📍Tirol region
📍Zell am See
📍Saalfelden (Pinzgau)
Most towns celebrate Sonnwendfeuer in some form, usually with bonfires.
Check local tourism websites for exact dates and locations.
If you only pick one June event, I’d seriously consider this one.
🚤 HALLSTATT LAKE PROCESSION (Corpus Christi)
📅 June 4, 2026
⏰ Around 8:30–9:00 AM after the church service
Everyone talks about Hallstatt’s postcard views.
Almost nobody talks about this.
Decorated wooden boats cross the lake as part of a centuries-old religious procession while church bells echo through the mountains.
It’s one of the very few days I think Hallstatt is actually worth dealing with the crowds for 😭
⚠️ Arrive VERY early. Parking fills up fast.
👨👩👧👦 TRAVELING WITH KIDS?
Austria becomes unfair this time of year 😭
Some mountain playgrounds are honestly better than actual amusement parks.
📍 Prinzenberg Natrun (Hochkönig)
📍 Fichtenschloss (Zillertal)
📍 Murmliwasser (Serfaus)
📍 Schmidolin’s Adventure World (Schmittenhöhe)
🍓 ONE LAST THING
June is strawberry-picking season.
Look for signs saying:
“Erdbeeren selbst pflücken”
Austrians genuinely spend sunny afternoons picking their own strawberries and somehow make it look like the best day ever 😭
