💡 Logistics Language: Intermodal Transport & Multimodal Transport
These two logistics terms are often used interchangeably but they describe different aspects of transport.
🚛 Intermodal Transport uses two or more transport modes, such as truck, rail, or ship, to move goods from origin to destination.
Throughout the journey, the cargo stays in the same loading unit, for example a container. This reduces the need for unloading and reloading.
Different carriers may be involved but the defining feature is the use of multiple transport modes while keeping the same loading unit.
🚢 Multimodal Transport also uses multiple transport modes to move goods efficiently.
The difference is that the entire shipment is managed by one logistics provider under a single contract. Even if different carriers are involved behind the scenes, the logistics provider coordinates the complete journey and gives the customer one point of contact from origin to destination.
The key difference:
📦 Intermodal = Multiple transport modes with the same loading unit.
📋 Multimodal = One logistics provider manages the entire journey under a single contract.
🔄 A transport can be both: one provider manages the journey while the goods stay in the same loading unit.
