Salty primordial oceans formed 3.8 billion years ago, 250 million years ago salt crystallized from a huge lake in Europe. Tectonic movements later formed the Alps.
Salt was used for preservation as early as 4,000 BC. The Celts mined it on the Dürrnberg, and in the 12th century the Salzburg prince archbishops promoted the trade.
Since the 17th century, the Dürrnberg salt mine has been the oldest show mine in the world. Today, the Salzburg Salt Worlds tell its story.
