Snowy Sheathbill (Chionis albus) 🤍
All white, boldly curious, and entirely unbothered by the presence of humans — the Snowy Sheathbill is one of those birds that stands out from a distance .
Along the shores of the Beagle Channel, on rocky coastal outcrops, or waddling across the deck of a catamaran, this bird operates with the cheerful confidence of something that has decided the world belongs to it. It is the only exclusively terrestrial bird that breeds in the Antarctic region, and in the non-breeding months it moves north to the coasts of Tierra del Fuego, where it becomes a constant and entertaining presence on almost any outing.

Paloma Antártica (Chionis albus) 🤍
Completamente blanca, llamativamente curiosa, y sin el menor reparo ante la presencia humana — la Paloma Antártica es de esas aves que sobresalen a la distancia.
En las costas del Canal Beagle, sobre los roquedales, o caminando con total desparpajo por la cubierta de un catamarán en plena excursión, esta ave opera con la confianza alegre de quien decidió que el mundo le pertenece. Es el único ave estrictamente terrestre que se reproduce en la región antártica, y en los meses invernales migra hacia el norte para instalarse en las costas de Tierra del Fuego, donde se convierte en una presencia constante y entretenida en casi cualquier salida.

White-throated Caracara (Daptrius albogularis) 🦅
There's something unmistakable about a White-throated Caracara on a high perch. The contrast is almost graphic — jet black above, clean white below — and the bird carries itself with the unhurried authority of a raptor that knows it owns the skyline.
In flight, it's even more striking. Long wings, deliberate wingbeats, riding the updrafts above the Beagle Channel with a composure that makes it look like it has nowhere urgent to be and everywhere worth surveying.
One of Tierra del Fuego's most charismatic raptors, the White-throated Caracara is regularly encountered near Ushuaia — on rocky outcrops, high branches, or soaring above the coastal forest — during our Ushuaia City Coast & Forest excursion. A bird that rewards anyone willing to stop, look up, and watch.

Hay algo inconfundible en un Matamico Blanco posado en las alturas. El contraste es casi gráfico — negro intenso por encima, blanco limpio por debajo — y el ave se sostiene con esa calma de rapaz que sabe que le pertenece el horizonte.
En vuelo, es aún más llamativo. Alas largas, batidos pausados, aprovechando las corrientes de aire sobre el Canal Beagle con una compostura que da la sensación de que no tiene ningún apuro y todo el paisaje para recorrer.
Uno de los rapaces más carismáticos de Tierra del Fuego, el Matamico Blanco se observa con regularidad en las cercanías de Ushuaia — sobre roquedales, ramas altas o planeando sobre el bosque costero — durante nuestra excursión Ushuaia City Coast & Forest. Un ave que recompensa a cualquiera que se detenga, levante la vista y simplemente mire.

Along the rocky shores of the Beagle Channel, where kelp beds drift in the cold current and the mountains rise on the far bank, the Kelp Goose is as much a part of the landscape as the water itself.
But look closely — because what appears to be two completely different birds is actually a pair. The male is an immaculate, almost luminous white. The female is richly barred in brown and black, with a bright yellow eye-ring that gives her away. It's one of the most striking cases of sexual dimorphism among Fuegian waterbirds, and one of the first things that stops a first-time visitor in their tracks.

The Kelp Goose is one of the emblematic species of our *Ushuaia City Coast & Forest* excursion — a half or full day exploring the coastline and forest right at the edge of the city, where the Beagle Channel delivers some of the most rewarding birding in Tierra del Fuego.

A lo largo de las costas rocosas del Canal Beagle, donde los cachiyuyos se mecen en la corriente fría y las montañas se recortan en la orilla opuesta, el Cauquén Costero forma parte del paisaje tanto como el agua misma.
Pero vale la pena mirar con atención — porque lo que parecen dos aves completamente distintas es en realidad una pareja. El macho es de un blanco inmaculado, casi luminoso. La hembra está finamente barrada en marrón y negro, con un llamativo anillo ocular amarillo que la delata. Es uno de los casos más notables de dimorfismo sexual entre las aves acuáticas fueguinas, y uno de los primeros detalles que detiene a cualquier visitante la primera vez que los ve juntos.

In the forests of Tierra del Fuego, you often hear them before you see them. A flash of green between the Lenga beeches, a burst of calls overhead — and then, if you look carefully, a pair of Austral Parakeets working their way through the canopy, feeding on leaves with quiet efficiency.
This species is woven into the fabric of the Fuegian forest. In early spring, we can find them feeding on Michay flowers, and later in the year, we may spot a nesting pair settled in the hollow of an old tree trunk, going about the unhurried business of raising a family at the end of the world.
The Austral parakeet is one of the most reliable and rewarding birds on our Tierra del Fuego National Park excursion. The forest offers several opportunities to observe and photograph them up close — they are patient and curious, and you could never tire of them.

En los bosques de Tierra del Fuego, a menudo se les oye antes de verlos. Un destello verde entre las lengas, una ráfaga de cantos sobre la cabeza… y luego, si se mira con atención, una pareja de Cachañas que se abre paso entre el dosel, alimentándose de hojas con silenciosa eficiencia.
Esta especie forma parte inseparable del bosque fueguino. A principios de primavera, podemos encontrarlos alimentándose de las flores del michay y, más adelante en el año, hay chances de encontrar a una pareja anidando en el hueco de un viejo tronco, dedicada sin prisas a la tarea de criar a su familia en el fin del mundo.
La Cachaña es una de las aves más fiables y gratificantes de nuestra excursión al Parque Nacional de Tierra del Fuego. El bosque ofrece numerosas oportunidades para observarlos y fotografiarlos de cerca: son pacientes y curiosos, y nunca te cansarás de ellos.

Tawny-throated Dotterel (Oreopholus ruficollis) 🐦
The Fuegian steppe doesn't give up its birds easily. The grass is low, the wind is constant, and everything that lives here has learned to blend in.
The Tawny-throated Dotterel is a master of this art. Its cryptic plumage dissolves into the coiron grass almost perfectly — until, if you're patient enough and lucky enough to have the right guide, you catch it: a head emerging from the stems, alert and still, watching you back.
On the best days, the adults are accompanied by their chicks, small and already perfectly camouflaged, navigating the grassland as if they've always known it.
This species is one of the highlights of our Northern Grassland Tierra del Fuego excursion — a full-day journey across the open steppe north of Ushuaia, one of the most rewarding birding landscapes in the region.

Chorlo Cabezón (Oreopholus ruficollis) 🐦
La estepa fueguina no entrega sus aves fácilmente. El pasto es bajo, el viento es constante, y todo lo que vive aquí aprendió a mimetizarse.
El Chorlo Cabezón es un maestro en ese arte. Su plumaje críptico se disuelve entre los coirones casi a la perfección — hasta que, con paciencia y con el guía indicado, lo encontrás: una cabeza asomando entre los pastos, quieta y atenta, mirándote de vuelta.
En los mejores días, los adultos vienen acompañados de sus pichones, pequeños y ya perfectamente camuflados, moviéndose por la estepa como si siempre la hubieran conocido.
Esta ave es uno de los atractivos de nuestra excursión Northern Grassland Tierra del Fuego — una jornada completa por la estepa abierta al norte de Ushuaia, uno de los paisajes de avistamiento más gratificantes de la región.

Yellow-bridled Finch (Melanodera xanthogramma) 🐦
High above the forests of Ushuaia, where the treeline gives way to open sky and wind-swept grass, this small bird lives its unhurried life among the rocks and wildflowers of the Andean steppe.
The Yellow-bridled Finch is one of those species that rewards patience and altitude in equal measure. You have to earn it — and when it finally appears, close enough to photograph, it doesn't disappoint.
This individual was found during our Andes Range Landscape & Birding Tour, a full-day excursion into the high mountains surrounding Ushuaia. One of the most remarkable birding experiences in Tierra del Fuego.

Yal Andino (Melanodera xanthogramma) 🐦
Muy por encima de los bosques de Ushuaia, donde el límite arbóreo cede paso al cielo abierto y al pastizal barrido por el viento, esta ave lleva su vida tranquila entre las rocas y las flores silvestres de la estepa altoandina.
El Yal Andino es de esas aves que exigen paciencia y altitud a partes iguales. Hay que ganárselo — y cuando por fin aparece, lo suficientemente cerca como para fotografiarlo, no decepciona.
Este ejemplar fue avistado durante nuestro Tour de Avistamiento en la Cordillera de los Andes, una excursión de día completo hacia las montañas que rodean Ushuaia. Una de las experiencias de avistamiento de aves más notables de Tierra del Fuego.
