Since independence, Somalia’s modern history has been marked by chronic instability, violence, war, and famine. After a period of fragile progress, signs are now pointing toward renewed tension.
𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮’𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿. It sits beside the Bab el Mandeb strait, one of the world’s most critical shipping chokepoints linking the Red Sea to global trade. 𝗔𝗻𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁.
𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴. Al Shabaab remains operational and has established cooperation with the Iran backed Houthis in Yemen, including weapons transfers, financing routes, and logistical coordination across the Gulf of Aden. T𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗜𝗿𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗮𝗯 𝗲𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗯 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s term expires on May 15, with no clear or agreed election plan in place. Somaliland has already exited the federal framework, and other regions are signaling growing resistance.
The federal government is backed by Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistan, China, and the wider international system. Somaliland and other regional actors maintain close ties with Israel, the UAE, Ethiopia, and Taiwan.
