American Prairie, a nonprofit focused on restoring native grassland ecosystems in Montana, studied how well wildlife-friendly fences contain bison while still allowing animals like deer and pronghorn to move freely.🦬

Between 2020 and 2023, researchers recorded only 31 bison escape incidents across more than two years, showing that the specialized fencing system is largely effective. Most escapes occurred during the summer breeding season when bulls fought for dominance, sometimes forcing rivals through or even over fences.

The fences are designed with a smooth lower wire so deer and pronghorn can pass underneath, while electrified and barbed wires help keep bison contained. Escaped bison were typically returned to the reserve within three days.

Researchers concluded that the fencing successfully balances two important goals: maintaining natural bison herds and supporting wildlife movement. However, recent restrictions on grazing access by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management may limit future expansion of American Prairie’s efforts to restore large-scale prairie ecosystems.

She lost her sight, but never lost her family. Isn’t that what real loyalty looks like? ❤️

When a Yellowstone wolf named 2471F lost her sight, experts expected her pack to leave her behind. Instead, the Lamar Canyon pack did something remarkable—they adapted.

As her blindness worsened, pack members changed the way they hunted, stayed closer to her, and helped her remain part of the group. Years later, she is still surviving and thriving alongside her family.

Sometimes loyalty is stronger than survival instincts, and some bonds are stronger than science can predict.
