*CIF – Cost, Insurance and Freight*
*CIF* (Cost, Insurance and Freight) is an Incoterms® rule mainly used for sea and inland waterway shipments.
- Seller pays: Cost of goods, export clearance, freight to the destination port, and minimum cargo insurance.
- Seller arranges: Shipping and insurance up to the named destination port.
- Buyer pays: Import clearance, duties/taxes, and costs after arrival at the destination port.
Risk transfer: Risk passes to the buyer once the goods are loaded onto the vessel at the port of shipment, not when they reach the destination.
Example:
CIF Dar es Salaam Port, Tanzania – Incoterms® 2020 means the seller covers the goods, freight, and required insurance up to Dar es Salaam Port.
The buyer handles import clearance, duties/taxes, and delivery after arrival.
