DAR ES SALAAM: EASTERN GATEWAY TO THE CENTRAL CORRIDOR
Dar es Salaam is more than Tanzania’s main port. It is an important Indian Ocean gateway for cargo moving into Zambia, the DRC, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and Malawi.
Through road links, the TAZARA railway and lake connections, the port gives shippers and transporters another route into the region. For Zambian and DRC copper, as well as general cargo, that means an important alternative to southern routes.
The practical pay-off is clear: less dependence on one corridor, more resilience when another route is congested, and the possibility of more competitive freight rates. 🚛
But planning matters. Port congestion and inland transit times can vary, so realistic delivery windows, route checks and early coordination with relevant customs authorities or a licensed clearing agent in the countries involved remain essential.
Dar es Salaam is one of the region’s choices for building stronger, more flexible trade routes across Southern and East Africa.
