"Inflammation" is everywhere on social media. But most of what you're reading is wrong.

As a clinical dietitian, I cringe every time I see a wellness influencer tell you to cut out an entire food group because it's "inflammatory."

Let's set the record straight.
Inflammation is not your enemy.
Acute inflammation is how your body heals a cut, fights an infection, and recovers from exercise. You need it. The problem is chronic, low-grade inflammation — the kind that quietly persists and is linked to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic dysfunction.

So what actually drives it?
Research points to a consistent pattern:
— Diets consistently high in ultra-processed foods
— Excess added sugar over time
— Low intake of fiber, omega-3s, and polyphenols
— Poor sleep, chronic stress, and physical inactivity
Notice what's NOT on that list? Gluten (for people without celiac disease).
— Nightshade vegetables.
"Toxic" cooking oils. Fruit sugar.

What does an anti-inflammatory diet actually look like?
It looks like the Mediterranean diet. Lots of vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fatty fish, nuts, and olive oil.

The evidence behind this pattern is robust — and it doesn't require perfection, just consistency.

Here's my clinical take: one food won't inflame you, and one superfood won't save you. Your overall dietary pattern over months and years is what matters.

If you're concerned about inflammation, start with what's on your plate most of the time — not what's being sold to you.
