SDA’s Fierce & Fearless: Fierce Moves, Fearless Hearts Ignite Picasso’s Stage
For two unforgettable nights in November 2025, Picasso’s Theatre came alive thanks to Surané’s Dance Academy’s 18th annual showcase, Fierce & Fearless. With Divergent Ops as the main sponsor, the event celebrated artistry, courage, and community in a production that left audiences buzzing.
A Stage Ignited
Surané’s Dance Academy (SDA) didn’t just put on a show — they transformed Picasso’s Theatre into a dazzling spectacle. With an expanded stage, elegant draping, professional lighting, and every detail carefully curated, the venue was almost unrecognisable. It became a space built for performance, designed to highlight every leap, spin, and beat with maximum impact.
“I told Picasso’s I would turn their venue into something immaculate — and we did. It was unrecognisable, professional, and completely immersive. I couldn’t be prouder,” says Surané Stapelberg, director and owner of SDA.
From the moment the show began, the energy was electric. Every dancer moved with precision, passion, and fire, commanding the stage with confidence and fearless artistry. Audiences were drawn into a world of rhythm, movement, and storytelling, feeling every emotion conveyed through each performance.
Fierce, Fearless, and Full of Life
Fierce & Fearless wasn’t only about technical excellence — it was a celebration of joy, courage, and shared energy. The showcase explored themes of resilience and self-belief, with performances that were both powerful and playful.
Audiences laughed, gasped, and cheered as dancers poured everything into each number. From intricate choreography to daring lifts, every moment was charged with excitement. The evening struck a perfect balance between exceptional talent and pure entertainment, enhanced by music, lighting, and a thoughtfully curated overall experience.
“The dancers set the stage on fire — every move, every beat, completely committed. It was incredible, and the audience felt it. It was such a joyous, exhilarating experience,” reflects Surané Stapelberg.
A Community Celebration
The showcase would not have been possible without the support of its sponsors. Divergent Ops, the main sponsor, is a local security company deeply committed to community upliftment. Their investment in youth development and the arts played a vital role in bringing this production to life.
“Their support allowed us to create a platform where dancers could truly shine and where the community could come together. Without them, this would not have been possible,” says Surané Stapelberg.
Additional sponsors also contributed significantly, making the event a true celebration of community collaboration. The showcase served as a reminder that great art is never created in isolation — it thrives through shared vision and support.
A Stage That Burned Bright
Following the previous year’s showcase at Ilanga Mall’s Ster-Kinekor, SDA set out to elevate the experience even further. Picasso’s provided the perfect theatre setting to match the scale, emotion, and ambition of the production.
Tragically, just one week after the showcase, Picasso’s Theatre was lost to a devastating fire. In reflection, the energy and brilliance of Fierce & Fearless made the stage feel as though it was already burning bright — a powerful and unforgettable moment in time.
“Though the venue is gone, the spirit of the show — the courage, the talent, the community — will live on,” says Surané Stapelberg.
A Legacy of Courage and Creativity
Fierce & Fearless is more than a showcase — it is a legacy. A testament to the dedication, resilience, and fearless artistry of SDA dancers, staff, and supporters. While physical spaces may be lost, the impact of creativity, empowerment, and connection remains.
“Every dancer, every performer, every supporter poured themselves into this showcase. It was something truly special, and it will live on in our memories and our community,” says Surané Stapelberg.
The 18th annual showcase stood as a bold reminder that the arts have the power to inspire, uplift, and unite — a celebration of talent, heart, and fearless ambition.
SDA proved that while stages may fade, the fire of creativity and community never will.
