Meet Matthew. 🐝
This young gentleman was thrown into the deep end and learnt how to swim!
He has shown great perseverance, passion, GUTS and dedication towards his work. Matthew is a fast learner and has proven himself time and again.

Why do some bees look different from each other even within the same hive ?

As the mother of the colony, the queen bee mates with many drones (males) from other colonies during her one and only mating flight early in life. She then stores the s***m inside of her for lifelong egg fertilization.

This results in a hive full of half-sister worker bees. That’s why you will see a variety of colourings within the hive, some lighter, some darker. Bringing genetic diversity into the hive in this way benefits them as a whole by allowing the traits of many lineages to be expressed. The benefits include additional disease resistance, increased productivity, and clever hygienic behaviours.

Bees figured out a long time ago that there’s strength in diversity. 🐝
