A supermarket shelf shows us the end of the journey.

Behind it are farmers keeping farm businesses afloat. Staff caring for herds. Farm teams milking. Drivers collecting. Laboratories testing. Processors producing. Distribution teams moving products. Retail workers getting food onto shelves.

And behind all of those jobs are people, families and communities whose livelihoods are connected to the food we eat.

On World Food Day, we’re reminded that a strong food system is about more than what reaches our tables. It’s also about the people and industries that make getting it there possible.

We’re proud to play one part in that much bigger chain.

A litre of milk might look simple. The system behind it isn’t.
Before dairy reaches a supermarket shelf, there has already been herd care, feed, labour, milking, cooling, collection, quality checks, transport and processing, and the list goes on..

And behind each of those steps are people whose work contributes to keeping South Africa’s food system functioning.
It’s easy to see the finished product.

Every now and then, it’s worth seeing everything that came before it too.

Fuel may be the obvious one. But keeping milk moving also means trucks, logistics control, tyres, maintenance, vehicle wear, driver time – which is our responsibility at Tip-Top, but it’s the demands of having to rely on failing rural routes and roads that bring about added challenges.

When journeys become longer, slower or harder on vehicles, those pressures add up.

Most consumers will never see this part of the journey when they pick up a dairy product from the shelf.
But it’s another reminder that the food in our fridges depends on a much bigger system working behind the scenes.

Milk needs somewhere to go.

Dairy production doesn’t simply stop when demand changes.

Farmers need reliable market access. Processors need the right supply. And between the two is a constant process of matching, planning, communicating and moving milk where it is needed.

It’s a part of the dairy system most consumers will never see.

For dairy farmers, looking after their herds is part of the everyday work - feeding, monitoring, observing and responding to what each herd needs.

It’s work that happens every day, long before most of us reach for the milk in the fridge.

Running a dairy farm means managing countless moving parts, often at the same time, while the everyday work still needs to get done.

Milk in the morning coffee. Yoghurt at breakfast. Cheese in a lunchbox.

And that's exactly how a good food system should feel.

But behind that convenience are farmers, farm workers, drivers, laboratories, processors and many others doing their part every day.
