As part of a collaborative effort to improve safety at level crossings, Transnet Freight Rail, is joining the Railway Safety Regulator, the Department of Transport (DoT), Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa and Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager, for a Level Crossing Safety Awareness Campaign in Witbank.

Minister of Transport Honourable Barbara Creecy was also in attendance, where she engaged with motorists and members of the community, reinforcing the importance of safety on railway tracks.

The campaign forms part of Transport Month initiatives, which are led by RSR, focuses on raising awareness among motorists, pedestrians and communities about the importance of exercising caution and abiding by safety rules.

Moreover, the campaign will give all stakeholders an opportunity to reinforce their shared commitment to safer rail crossings and responsible behaviour on railway infrastructure.

Today, Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) Chief Executive Russell Baatjies joined a panel discussion with other industry leaders on advancing railway safety in South Africa at the Railway Safety Regulator’s webinar on the State of Safety Report 2025/26.

Railway Safety Regulator CEO Brian Monakali presented key findings, noting no security-related incidents were attributed directly to TFR under the 2025/26 separated reporting model.

Responding to the findings, Baatjies highlighted some of the key improvements and steps TFR has taken, as well as areas that remain a key focus in strengthening safety across its operations, including:

• Strengthening rolling stock inspections and wagon servicing to prevent leaks,
• Ensuring employees have the right PPE,
• Conducting safety simulations twice a year,
• Exploring technology to enhance safety
• Reducing non-operational rolling stock, standing in yards
• Strengthening near-miss reporting through regular employee safety, and symposiums
• Building and sustaining a strong safety culture.

This is while Baatjies also emphasised that safer railways require continuous action, accountability and a shared commitment.

Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) Chief Executive Russell Baatjies will join an expert panel at the Release of the 2025/26 State of Safety Report webinar.

The webinar will provide insights into the current state of railway safety in South Africa, bringing together industry experts to explore ways to strengthen safety across the rail sector.

The panel discussion topic “Advancing Railway Safety in South Africa: Trends, Challenges and Collaborative Solutions,” will examine emerging trends, key safety challenges and the role of collaboration in building a safer, more resilient railway industry.
