In 1968, Brat, a 38-foot gaff rig Yawl with a striking set of tri sails, arrived in South Africa.
After the historic evacuation of Allied troops stranded on the beaches of France during WW2, she was aptly named Brat of Dunkirk.
Built by Camper and Nicholson as Yard Build No. 211, Brat was originally designed in 1913 by Charles Nicholson for Mr J Lee White.
She was launched as Brat and owned by FW Leith from 1914 .
He sold her in 1921 and since t.hen, she has had no fewer than 23 owners.
The oldest boat in South Africa will now embark on a new adventure in the beautiful village of Hout Bay in Cape Town: A preservation project that will mark a significant moment in the rich maritime history of our country.
A suitable space has been cleared for her at Hout Bay Vineyards – her home for the next few years.
Here, she will be meticulously restored in time for her 110th Anniversary.
Brat will once again make the craftsmen of Gosport who built her extremely proud.
