HELPFUL HINTS WHEN MOVING

1. Pack an overnight bag containing all the essentials.
2. Pack the items you will need FIRST in a clear plastic bin.
3. Wrap your breakables (dishes, glasses, etc.) in clothing to save on bubble wrap.
4.Labeling what's in your boxes, add what room they'll be going into, as well.
5. Take a photo of how your electronics are connected so you can remember how and where all the wires go.
6. If you have a lot of fragile valuables, hiring movers as opposed to asking friends can end up paying for itself.
7. If you do hire movers, be sure to read the fine print and find out if they have any weird rules.

HAPPY MOVING :)

Another successful move, well done to the Mother City Movers team.

Helping your furry friends with the house move

Moving house with pets can be extremely stressful – for both you and them. In particular, cats and dogs become very attached to their own territory and will need care and attention when you move home. And there are a number of simple things you can do to help your pets feel at home in your new house as quickly as you do.

Before the move
Have an identity collar tag made with your name and contact number engraved on it so it’s ready to be worn by your pet on move day. This will increase the chance of your pet being returned to you should they escape or get lost during or after the house move.

Just like humans, cats and dogs can suffer from travel sickness. If you’re moving some distance away, ask your vet about medication to make the journey easier for them.

Animals can become disturbed by strange people coming in and out of the house to carry out the removals. Therefore make arrangements in advance for your pet to stay with a familiar friend, neighbour or relative, or even in kennels/a cattery on move day – and maybe even a few days afterwards. This means you can focus on moving without worrying about potential escapees.

On the day of the move
If your pet has to stay with you on the day you move house, there are a few things you can do to make the day less stressful – for you and your pet.

Make sure cats are inside your house before the removals start. If they’re outside, you may not be able to get them in by the time you have to leave your old home.
Consider using a calming pheromone spray for your cat.
Leave small pets in a quiet place while the removals are taking place.

After the move
Pets need time to adjust to their new home once you’ve moved in. There are some things you can do to help them get used to strange surroundings.

Keep cats inside the new house for 24 hours and feed them before you let them out for the first time.
Make sure the garden is secure – check fences carefully for any gaps.
Get back into your old routine straight away.

NINE TIPS ON PACKING

Use the right size boxes.
Put heavy items, like books, in small boxes; light items, like linens and pillows, in bigger ones. (Large boxes packed with heavy items are a common complaint of professional movers. They not only make the job harder but also have a better chance of breaking.)

Put heavier items on the bottoms of boxes, lighter items on top.
And if you’re loading the truck yourself, pack heavier boxes first, toward the front of the truck, for balance.

Don’t leave empty spaces in the boxes.
Fill in gaps with clothing, towels, or packing paper. Movers often won’t move boxes that feel loosely packed or unbalanced.

Avoid mixing items from different rooms in the same box.
It will make your packing quicker and your unpacking a lot easier, too.

Label each box with the room it’s destined for and a description of its contents.
This will help you and your movers know where every box belongs in your new place. Numbering each box and keeping an inventory list in a small notebook is a good way to keep track of what you’ve packed―and to make sure you still have everything when you unpack.

Tape boxes well.
Use a couple of pieces of tape to close the bottom and top seams, then use one of the movers’ techniques―making a couple of wraps all the way around the box’s top and bottom edges, where stress is concentrated.

If you’re moving expensive art, ask your mover about special crating.
Never wrap oil paintings in regular paper; it will stick. For pictures framed behind glass, make an X with masking tape across the glass to strengthen it and to hold it together if it shatters. Then wrap the pictures in paper or bubble wrap and put them in a frame box, with a piece of cardboard between each framed piece for protection.

Bundle breakables.
As you pack your dishes, put packing paper around each one, then wrap bundles of five or six together with more paper. Pack dishes on their sides, never flat. And use plenty of bunched-up paper as padding above and below. Cups and bowls can be placed inside one another, with paper in between, and wrapped three or four in a bundle. Pack them all in dish-barrel boxes.

Consider other items that will need special treatment.
Vansant says his movers treat TVs like any other piece of furniture, wrapping them in quilted furniture pads. He points out, however, that plasma TVs require special wooden crates for shipping if you don’t have the original box and can be ruined if you lay them flat. If you’re packing yourself, double-box your TV, setting the box containing the TV into another box that you’ve padded with packing paper.
