The biggest fear that a first-time importer has is that of being the victim of a scam, and it is a well-founded fear. Buying from a supplier that we cannot visit (for example in China) through a company that we only know on the internet is not something that we trust.
Even the Alibaba portal itself is home to, much to its regret, hundreds of fraudulent companies based in China. That is why we must keep our eyes wide open when looking for reliable suppliers and export companies.
Here are some useful tips when it comes to avoiding fraud:
1. Distrust whenever they offer us a secure means of payment, such as Paypal.
2. Beware of strange translations. If the emails they send you seem translated with Google Translator, it is a sign that it could be a fraudulent company.
3. Put yourself in the hands of professionals. If they are not able to know for sure if a supplier is safe, hire a company with the capacity to visit it and find out if everything is in order.
4. Searching for references on the internet for suppliers from China is complicated, but it is not so for the intermediary companies that we pointed out in point 3.
You always have to search Google and social media to find reviews from former customers. If we cannot find such clients, the company will need to provide us with compelling references to refer to.
5. Never pay in advance to a provider through bank transfer or similar.
