🚂 TeamTRAK Visits Chittaranjan Locomotive Works!

As a team of passionate students and three of our esteemed professors from IIT Kharagpur, we're thrilled to share our recent visit to Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW), one of the largest electric locomotive manufacturers in the world!

We had the incredible opportunity to witness the intricate manufacturing process of the mighty WAG-9 locomotives. From the assembly of the traction motors to the final testing phase, every step showcased the remarkable engineering and precision that goes into building these powerful machines.

This experience has deepened our understanding of locomotive technology and inspired us to bring this knowledge back to our work at TeamTRAK. A huge thank you to the team at CLW for their warm welcome and invaluable insights. We're more motivated than ever to push the boundaries of railway research and innovation!

TeamTRAK, India's first-ever student railway research group, which started its journey under the aegis of the Centre for Railway Research, IIT Kharagpur recently made its mark by being the only team outside Europe to participate in the Railway Challenge 2024, held in the Stapleford Miniature Railway near London, United Kingdom. Mentored by Prof. Vikranth Racherla, Mechanical Engineering Department, TeamTRAK participated in the 'Entry Level' category that involves design of a miniature locomotive and secured the runner-up position in their category, securing 316 points. The team presented its very own design of a miniature locomotive incorporated with regenerative braking and other advanced technologies capable of hauling a 2-tonne load in a 10¼’’ gauge track.

Team TRAK made waves as the sole non-European team at the IMechE Railway Challenge 2024 in the UK. We are also the first team from India to participate in the challenge and represent Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. We proudly clinched runner-up, at the Entry level, with our custom-designed miniature locomotive featuring regenerative braking and cutting-edge tech, capable of handling a 2-tonne load on a 10¼’’ gauge track. Organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the competition tested our design, cost-effectiveness, market appeal, and dynamic performance.

The judges' positive feedback validates our design prowess, fueling our drive to craft a full-scale locomotive for next year’s dynamic challenges. Congratulations to the Railway Challenge at Sheffield for emerging as the overall winner, Siemens Mobility for winning the entry-level category, and all the participating teams.
