Ten years ago RIGHT NOW I was in a plane, heading to Orlando, and about to take my first ride on the APM at MCO, hop on the Disney’s Magical Express, and sleep at Disney’s Port Orleans - French Quarter Resort.
I had always wanted to visit but had several chances just slip away (my senior year of high school - I was supposed to be leading the marching band down Main Street USA and plans changed to Colonial Williamsburg after 4 years of expecting WDW!) I knew at some point the castle was a cake; but WDW to me was the animated movies. I really didn’t know what truly was there (though I did research!)
I didn’t expect to cry when I saw the castle. Or when I met Ariel. Or run around for 14 hours non stop, enough so that I exhausted my parents and we had to get a scooter for my dad! Even though I was in my early 30s, I got to be the kid in the park with my parents.
First Dole Whip. Saw Mark McGrath perform at Food & Wine. Rope dropped. Got sick on Mission Space Orange (NEVER AGAIN). Rode buses and boats and monorails and trains. Realized there were so many different resorts. Teared up when I left because I didn’t know how that trip would affect me.
Funniest part? I DID NOT KNOW PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN MOVIE WAS BASED ON THE RIDE UNTIL THIS VISIT. And I was obsessed with the original three movies! (Yes I know it was probably based on DL’s and not WDW’s)
I didn’t expect to fall in love with this place. To cry when I meet Mickey Mouse (every time, always), to love a place built on make believe, but become obsessed with how it operates.
I never thought I would come back. I didn’t realize people visited multiple times. But six months later, I hopped a plane and headed back - and here we are today.
Happy Ten Years of Disney to me. And to many more ✨🏰🥳
