Mandatory evacuations are expanding as a fire that began Saturday half a mile from the Parks Highway crossed the closed highway near Mile 88.
“The McKinley Fire is on both sides of the Parks Highway. We are evacuating both sides of the highway from mi. 91 to mi. 82,” the Matanuska-Susitna Borough announced Sunday night. “We anticipate that additional evacuations may be necessary further south.”
The southern shelter was moved south to the Menard Sports Complex in Wasilla.

Stay safe out there, and watch for sinkholes and other obstructions on the roads. Check on your friends and neighbors and stay warm. Magnitudes are being reported between 7.0 and 7.2. CNN is running some local TV affiliate coverage from Anchorage that KTUU can't broadcast themselves due to damage to the studios.

Thought I left the bears in Talkeetna, but look what turned up two blocks from my office... in New Mexico...

A young bear kept police and Game & Fish officers busy today after it leapt from a back yard near the Farmington Civic Center to tour the area.

Our website is back, sort of, with a new URL: tkanews.com will get you there. So far the only restored content is the obituary page from 2009. We will restore some galleries and the rest of the obits as soon as we can. The business is still closed, but the memories remain.

Welcome back! The Alaska Pioneer Press was a monthly newspaper serving the Matanuska and Upper Susitna Valleys. It started in this cabin by the Village Airstrip. We existed as an online news site in 2007, and in 2008 we became a print publication. We shut d

Hope you all weren't too

Our thoughts are with you all. We're following the Sockeye fire news closely. Hats off to KTNA, the Frontiersman, KTUU and especially Zaz and crew at ADN.com.

It sounds like there's a mini crime wave along the Spur Road. Posts on Talkeetna Trader indicate some screens were stolen from a structure and a goat was purposely untied from its tether. Watch out for your friends and neighbors!

We have allowed the Alaska Pioneer Press website (www.akpioneerpress.com) to go dormant. The newspaper closed in 2010. We haven't been tracking visitors, but suspect it hasn't been used much lately as we haven't promoted it. The cost of maintaining it is minimal but seems like an unnecessary expense for us. Should anyone in the Talkeetna area be interested in taking the site over and preserving its content (obituaries and local news between 2006 and 2010) please send us a note.

Apparently a gremlin is alive in our page. Our Feb. 24 post on two state ballot measures being certified has posted, a bit late. The good news is it was still accurate! The post has been deleted.

Location: Petersville
Case number: AK14015133
Type: Search and Rescue
Text: On 03/03/2014, at approximately 1400 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a report of a Search and Rescue in the area of Jake Lake, near mile seventeen Petersville Road. The complainant, Tom Taylor, age 68, of Trapper Creek, and a friend had been riding snowmachines in the area when an Irish Setter ran up to them from the direction of the lake. The dog, named "Amber", led them approximately 400 yards to an injured snowmachiner laying in the snow. Investigation revealed the victim, Otis Orth, age 52, of Trapper Creek had crashed his snowmachine and had been laying in the snow since the previous day. "Amber" had remained with her owner, keeping him warm overnight, until she heard the snowmachines go by. Several local cabin owners that lived near the scene responded and assisted to keep the Orth warm until medics arrived. Orth was conscious, breathing, and alert, but unable to move due to multiple injuries.
Life Med responded from Anchorage in a helicopter while Trapper Creek Ambulance responded with their Off-Road rescue equipment. Troopers, Life Med, and EMS arrived at the scene at approximately 1540 hours. Orth was stabilized, and transported via Life Med helicopter to an Anchorage hospital where he is currently listed in Stable Condition. "Amber" was turned over to a local acquaintance of the victim.
