Tea time with sencha and a traditional sweet Minatsuki 水無月と煎茶🍵🌿

This triangle mochi sweet topped with red beans is a wagashi called Minazuki (literally means June)

Kyoto locals eat this sweet on June 30, wishing for the sound health for the latter half of the year🤲

The shape of Minazuki is made to resemble an ice block. (In the old time, it was a custom to eat ice in summer to beat the heat and to wish for the good health) 🧊 Red beans is said to ward off evil spirits.

What I love about Kyoto is that the old tradition still exist in people’s daily life🌸

恥ずかしながら2016年に京都に引っ越してくるまで、水無月というお菓子を存じませんでした。伝統文化や習慣が人々の暮らしに息づいていることが、京都の魅力の一つだと思います。

天龍寺の枝垂れ桜です🌸素晴らしい枝振り！春が待ち遠しいですね。天龍寺のお庭では色々な種類の椿や梅の花が咲き始めていました。暖冬のせいか、どのお花も少し早咲きな気がします。

西芳寺(苔寺) ☘
今年の冬は苔の庭をお休みさせるとのことで、西来堂(本堂)にて襖絵が公開されています。写経もありませんが、希望者は坐禅体験ができます。

また通常は通ることができない総門から入り、参道を本堂までゆっくりと歩きます。奥に進むにつれて禅の世界に導かれるようで、心洗われる体験でした🍃

苔の庭は見ることができませんが、冬の限定公開オススメです✨
Saiho-ji is known as Moss Temple and has become so popular not only among locals but also with travelers from all over the world. As Steve Jobs loved this temple, it is a perfect place if you would like to spend a zen and meditative time while you are in Kyoto🍃
You will have to make a reservation by mail (no website entry available) if you would like to visit the temple. The temple’s famous moss garden (2nd photo) is closed until early March in order to “give rest” to the garden. But instead you can see their stunning artworks painted on the sliding doors(fusuma) in the main hall. In addition, you will be able to enter the temple from the main gate and walk through the path (1st photo) both of which are usually closed to the public. It was an AMAZING experience to walk the path - i felt like I was walking from the worldly world to the zen world with the calm and tranquil state of mind. If you are coming to Kyoto next month, (February 2020) this is something you must do in winter Kyoto❄️

Our shop is located in Arashiyama, an area famous for bamboo forest and the beautiful landscapes🎋 .
But nowadays, the beauty has attracted too many tourists and some complain that there is no place for rest. Our tea house and local walking tours are aimed at those who want to avoid such crowds and have a meaningful time through experiencing authentic tea, food and cultural activities🧘‍♀️
