So much fun at the 2023 ASHA conference! I learned so much over the last few days and had a blast connecting and networking with so many wonderful SLP’s in our field! Can’t wait to share all the new information I learned with my families 😄

Making lemonade in speech today with our student Abby’s fancy juice press 👩‍🍳🍋

During this activity we were able to work on multi-step sequencing, vocabulary, executive functioning, and social skills! The lemonade was pretty tasty too 💛🥰

Hi I’m Macy, a mom of 2 and pediatric speech-language pathologist ☺️Follow for more child communication tips!

Want to know an effective way to highlight a new speech sound?
Try slightly elongating the preceding vowel sound instead of adding on an additional sound.

So if your child says “ca” instead of cat, you could respond by saying “hi caaaat” (not “catuh”).

Why is this method effective?

1️⃣ Elongating the vowel builds a split second of anticipation as to how you will finish the word. Anticipation = Attention!

2️⃣ Elongating the vowel gives your child a little more time to process the sounds you are saying. This helps to maximize your model!

3️⃣ This trick avoids phonological awareness errors. We don’t want our kids learning the extra sound… especially as they start spelling words.

⭐️By elongating the preceding vowel you are modifying a sound that IS in the word instead of adding a sound that is not.⭐️

One of my FAVORITE parts of my work is being able to collaborate with parents and caregivers in their homes.

Over the past few months I have been working with a patient’s mother to come up with a communication system that she felt was a good fit for her daughter and family. We have been working on sign language, switches, object communication, gestures…but recently mom came to me with an idea to mount the switches on to squares of peg board with parts of real objects also attached… We talked about it and came up with a plan together..She had her husband craft the boards to make the vision come to life and we just started using the system with highly preferred objects today!

As you can see her words speak for themselves 😊

I am so thankful and feel blessed every day for the families that allow me to work with their children! It’s moments like these that remind me what my job is all about! ♥️

Opening day for ⚾️ is right around the corner! This week we are having fun coloring, cutting, and stuffing gloves with baseballs containing our target words! This client is working on CV/VC/CVC words and diphthong vowels with the use of DTTC & PROMPT. Before putting our words into our glove…we have to say them ten times!

Day #1 was a success!

Today our Pre-K friends met each other for the first time and learned all about being part of a group! We enjoyed social play outside, painted with marbles, and learned about leaves!

Want to join in the fun? It’s not too late! 😀
