I came to Kyoto for autumn leaves… and found a LEGENDARY Pokémon 🔥🍁

In all my time in Japan, I’d never actually seen a Poké Lid. Then, wandering Arashiyama after visiting Yusai-tei, I nearly walked right over Ho-Oh 😳

Poké Lids (ポケふた) are Pokémon manhole covers found all over Japan, and each area gets a Pokémon with a local connection. Ho-Oh definitely represents Kyoto. Its name comes from 鳳凰 (hōō), the phoenix that sits on top of Kinkaku-ji, and there’s a big Ho-Oh statue at the Kyoto Pokémon Center too.

📍 Arashiyama Park, a short walk from Togetsukyō Bridge. Exact pin in the comments 📌

It’s super easy to find, right on the main tourist path.
Save this for your Kyoto trip 🍁

Which Pokémon manhole have YOU found? 🔥 Drop your pics below 👇📸

Here’s the story 👇

In most of Japan, October is called Kannazuki (神無月), the “month without gods”. The belief is that Japan’s 8 million gods all travel to Izumo Taisha in Shimane for a yearly meeting. In Izumo, the same month is called Kamiarizuki (神在月), the “month WITH gods” ⛩️

What are they meeting about? Fate, love and connections for the year ahead. Izumo Taisha is one of Japan’s most famous shrines for en-musubi (縁結び), the making of good connections 😳

Two things to know before you go:
🔸 The giant shimenawa (sacred rope) weighs several tonnes
🔸 At Izumo Taisha you clap 4 times, not 2 (2 bows, 4 claps, 1 bow)

Save this for your Shimane trip 📌
Would you ask the gods for love or luck? 👇

Could you get the perfect shot in 60 seconds? ⏱️🍁

This is Yusai-tei in Arashiyama, one of Kyoto’s most famous autumn views. And there’s a whole system to get it 👇

🪑 Line up and wait your turn
⏱️ Sit down = your 60 seconds start
👉 Then shuffle along to the next window

Honestly? Worth every second. The reds through those round windows are even better in person 😍

📌 Know before you go:
• Autumn = reservation only, through the official Yusai-tei website (it sells out fast)
• Autumn entry was ¥3,000 last year, paid online in advance
• No kids under 12 during autumn season, and no tripods
• 10 min walk from Togetsukyo Bridge
• Book the first slot of the day for the fewest people

Fun fact: Nobel Prize-winning author Yasunari Kawabata wrote in one of these rooms ✍️

Is this Japan’s MOST underrated castle? 🏯

Matsue Castle in Shimane is one of only 12 original castles left in Japan. It’s jet black, the views from the top are unreal, and there were barely any crowds.

Japan said I could get 3 wishes for ¥300… if I could aim 🎯

At Amanohashidate View Land you can try kawarake-nage (かわらけ投げ), a lucky clay plate throw 🍀 Write a wish on each plate, then throw it through the heart ❤️ or the Ring of Wisdom. Get it through and your wish comes true ✨

My wishes were for my students never to fail… I went 0 for 3 🖤🖤🖤
Sorry students 😅

What would YOU wish for? 👇

“Ew, why is my teacher trying to be an influencer?” 😅

Is it still cringe? Maybe.
Do I care? Not anymore.

The same students who laughed and questioned it are now some of my biggest supporters 📓🤍

Turns out showing them it’s okay to try something new, even if it looks a little silly, was one of the best lessons I could teach.

Living in Hyogo for a year taught me this prefecture has way more going on than people realise 👀

So I handpicked spots that are special to me! Inspiring you to visit Hyogo and add to your Japan itinerary📌

📍 Arima Onsen — soak in gold AND silver hot springs
📍 Awaji Island — yes there’s a life-size Godzilla you can zip line into
📍 Himeji Castle — the real deal, incredible castle
📍 Nunobiki Herb Garden — waterfall trail and gorgeous nature
📍 Minatogawa Tunnel — a monthly concert inside an old train tunnel
📍 Honpuku-ji — a temple you walk DOWN into, under a lotus pond (Legend of Zelda vibes)
📍 Kinosaki Onsen — 7 onsen, one yukata, zero regrets
📍 Takeda Castle — Japan’s actual Ghibli “Castle in the Sky”

Want the full breakdown? I put together a free Hyogo & Kobe Hidden Gems Guide with 10 spots, sample routes and all the practical details — link in my bio 📎

Would you struggle through the crowd for this view? 🍁👀

Every November, Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto opens at night for just 10 days, and a blue beam shoots into the sky that looks straight out of Your Name (君の名は) ✨ The light represents the compassion of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy. Below it, around 1,000 maple trees glow around the 13m wooden stage, built in 1633 without a single nail.

There was no mercy on the walk up 😅 Beautiful? Absolutely. Peaceful? Not even slightly.

📅 Autumn Night Viewing: Nov 21–30, 2026
🕘 Open until 21:30 (last entry 21:00), no booking needed
🎟️ Small separate night ticket (around ¥500)
💡 Tip: go closer to when the temple closes! There will be far less people there than when it opens!

Comment “MERCY” if you’d still go, or tag someone who loves Your Name 👇
