Funny the pictures you find when you least expect them. I've been looking for pictures for a Car Club magazine I'm compiling and this popped up, hidden in a car-related folder on the computer. I guess it is sort of!
Bailey was a grand old pooch. She passed away several months ago now, just one week shy of her 16th birthday. We didn't have her for that long, adopting her later in her life but I think she enjoyed her last few years running around and of course being with Ffred the Westie. Expert at playing deaf when she didn't want to come back but she had very acute hearing when dinner was being served (or maybe that was her nose!).
But she did love the MG. Ffred also loves to ride in the passenger foot well but dear old Bailey ... straight behind the wheel (literally) every time!
It can be really rewarding to have a dog who enjoys your pastimes and hobbies as much as you do. They don't criticise when you make a mistake, although they might come up for a scratch behind the ears or a rub on their tummy when you get really stressed trying to refit the distributor or adjust the mixtures! They sit and patiently watch as you work on the old car and only ask to go for a ride once every so often!

Going Old School

I seem to do a lot of car and steam train photography (I call it 'themed landscapes' to avoid being labelled a trainspotter!) and, like many photographers these days, everything is digital (Canon Full Frame mirrorless in my case). Point, shoot, shoot some more, and rely on the internal light metering systems and everything else to give you enough to work in Lightroom with to create that perfect image.
Recently I've gone back to film - large format 4x5 in my case having inherited a Linhof Master Technica. No point and shoot - it can take 10 minutes to set up for a single frame and another 15 minutes for the crowd to clear to get a clear shot.
I've put three rolls of 120 through the camera now - 36 exposures and I've got about 20 useable exposures back. Its a very very steep learning curve. Hugely rewarding. So satisfying when you get it 'right'.
These are a few of the images that have come back so far. Honestly, for a rank amateur using a camera that's over 50 years old (and the instructions are all written in German), I'm pretty happy with how they are turning out. You'd spend hours trying to get the same 'vintage' effect from Lightroom!
The only 'editing' has been straightening up the images post scanning and putting in my watermarks for social media. The colour and depth of view is all from using film stock that is some 10 years past its expiry date!

MGs Aplenty

A field of dreams? Not sure, but a photo call for the MG Car Club of South Australia certainly created a photographer's delight in Macclesfield today. Staged as a photo shoot for the Club's 2024 calendar, I couldn't help but take my cameras along and nab some candid photos in the field!

The weather was glorious, too good to leave the Little Blue Car at home, so a nice run up Upper Sturt Road and across the hills along Pole Road and through Ironbark to Macclesfield. I really should have stopped along the way to capture some of the amazing scenery and spring colours. Next time!

I'd love to say the car didn't miss a beat, but it developed an annoying hesitation under load - I guess that's my nights taken care of between now and the Bay to Birdwood chasing that down. The joys of classic car ownership!

A Grand Day Out

Five Sprites and Midgets burbling up though the Adelaide Hills and the Barossa Valley enroute to the Collingrove Hillclimb on a beautiful crisp clear Spring morning. The A Series seemed to be in fine fettle with a muted rasp and a crackle and pop on the overrun coming down the hills. Some thought I was crazy only wearing a polo shirt and shorts on a 5 degree morning but as usual the heater was in fine from heating our feet and the escaping warmth keeping our ears and noses from freezing as we headed through the hills with the roof down. A perfect way to start the month of October and juts a grand day out at the races!

The Sunday of the Labour Day long weekend saw the annual running of the Sporting Car Club of SA's Barossa Vintage Collingrove Hillclimb and, thanks to the efforts of Sprite Club and Sporting Car Club Member Gary Dodd, we had pole position inside the pit paddock for the day. And what a fabulous day it was, with an amazing collection of historic South Australian and interstate cars and bikes taking on the twists and incline of the Collingrove climb. From cars built for the Australian GP in the 1950s (and in one case, driven by the 15 year old Great Grandson of the cars creator), to a hauntingly beautiful SS100, classic Speedway Sprint Cars and all manner in-between, there was something for everyone!

Thank you to the Sporting Car Club for the opportunity and thank you to all the owners and drivers of these fabulous cars who were only too happy to stop and talk and recount the history of their vehicles. And no, they didn't exactly go easy on them up the course!

End Of An Era?

I’m don’t offer commentary about situations like this but some decision leave you in absolute bewilderment at times.

Much was made late last year as first the Cobdogla Steam and Irrigation Museum faced a challenging future with its principal sponsor, SA Water deciding it would not longer provide a yearly stipend help the museum with some of its key costs, an interesting decision at best considering the museum is (was?) the only dedicated irrigation museum in Australia, located in a key wine grape growing area whose very existence was because of irrigation.

Then the rising Murray River resulted in the volunteers being locked out of the museum on the grounds of Work Health and Safety. Now, whilst on the surface it’s hard to argue against this decision by SA Water as ultimately parts of the museum grounds became inundated by the rising water, causing considerable damage to some of the infrastructure of the museum, some members of the Society argued, indeed petitioned Government that the heavy handed, near draconian, approach to a total lock out and the ongoing lock out months after the waters had receded begs the question if the natural disaster wasn’t used by some to further an undercurrent to close the doors on the museum as an operating entity.

Finally, the inability to successfully transfer the lands from Crown Lands to the Museum society so they could re-open the doors and at least attempt to run the museum as a stand-alone business seems to have been the final nail in the coffin for this nearly 40 year old endeavour to preserve local history. Ironically (I’m told), one of the key factors in the Crown Lands not being willing to transfer the lands is the perception that the museum can’t afford to operate and pay the necessary insurance etc. Then again, when you are faced with a natural disaster during your peak revenue raising season and then locked out and not able to operate for subsequent holiday times your ability to create an income becomes severely restricted. And all this when the Museum leadership had finally made changes to bring parts of their financial system into the 21st Century with EFTPOS facilities, meaning the many non-cash carrying visitors who might not have previously visited will now never come in.

So what does this mean? Well, for the members of the museum society, several of whom planted the seed with the then Engineering and Water Supply back in the 1980s to create a museum where people could learn and have an enjoyable afternoon out, its means a very uncertain future. I’m told that the Society have been promised to be virtually gifted many of the museum assets that they have painstaking restored to working order, including a 0-4-0 Bagnall Engine, Fowler Traction Engine and other pieces, to go with the assets that they themselves already own and there will be support to help them relocate to a new venue, but how do you move several km of 2’ Gauge railway, potentially turntables, and all the infrastructure that’s been created over the past nearly 40 years to allow them to operate – workshops, stables and shed, water tanks, fire pits. One can only hope that a suitable solution can quickly reached and the many members can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Such an abject shame. Whilst the Government is able to provide support in terms of recovery grants for businesses affected by the river, it seems its not unable to support its own museum, yet at the same time it has been involved with painting a (albiet lovely) 50' long mural on a pipeline running between the river and Adelaide to create a tourist attraction and highlight the link between the corporation and the community. Doesn’t an active museum where you can learn about the history at the same time as having joyrides for kids also do that? Maybe I’m wrong, but I'm fairly sure it the flow on effect well after the than the artwork on a pipeline has faded.

Anyway, if you are reading this and wondering if you can help, I’m sure you can. Whilst letters and comments of encouragement let the members know that you care, if you are feeling highly philanthropic perhaps get in touch with the museum. Whilst the local Berri Barmera Council is fully onboard with helping the museum survive and SA Water is, it must be said, helping with assistance to move and the transfer of assets, what they critically need is a guardian angel. Someone who can see the value and who can step in help with the financial help and business guidance to allow them to stand on their own four wheels (so to speak). I can guarantee they will listen. Or it needs the SA Government to realise what its likely loosing and to turn around recent decisions and keep the light on and the sounds of kids giggling with joy aloud as they ‘drive’ a 25 tonne traction engine or ride along behind the 115 year old steam engine through the vineyards and past the river.

Halloween themed nights, Santa’s Christmas Express or just a regular steaming day. Mirth, laughter and a slice of history all in one spot, complete with a hamburger and chips. Possibly, probably, likely, soon to be a thing of the past unless something can change or a new home can be found.

The photos below have been taken by me over a number of years and re-posted here. Just so people can see the joy the society brings to kids young and old. I’ve been visiting the museum since I was a little boy, years before it was a museum, when it was an idea in the minds of my father and several others. I think all my brothers and sister, mum and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins similarly had guided tours of the grounds at one point or another and the equipment in the years leading up to the museum coming in to being. As kids the traction engine and the little locomotive were playground attractions and we only dreamt of them operating as young children do in play.

And I haven't even mentioned the world famous and heritage listed Humphrey Pump. One step at a time.

Peter Malinauskas, Susan Close MP and SA Water, perhaps its time for a reprieve and a new way of looking at this? Its not to late. This isn't just a working museum, its a community that binds together people from all walks of life across the Riverland and across this great state of ours.

If you feel strongly enough, please repost this into your interest groups or share amongst friends at work at see if the message can get out. And let’s hope for common sense and a bright future as once it’s gone, its likely gone forever.

Peter Hall Memorial 6 Hour Relay

For an avid photographer and motorsport fan that I've only been to Mallala Motorsport Park twice is surprising really - and what a great day it was, although I wasn't there to take photos really, hence why the images in this gallery are somewhat focused on a few teams.

The event in question was the Peter Hall Memorial 6 Hour Relay. Its a 'teams' event with car clubs putting in teams of 4-6 cars to compete (one car per team on the track at one time). Its not the fastest car or team that wins. There is no prize for the quickest lap or the highest number of laps. Regularity is the name of the game and the teams that win or place are those that nominated a lap time pre race for each driver and, basically, stick closest to the nominated time.

Our teams didn't win. The name of one team, "We're in it for the beers" sums up it for us - a good day out with friends old and new. The event is hard on cars even if they are not running at full race pace. Our teams were no different to the others, with fanbelts thrown, gearboxes blown, mysterious electrical gremlins and brakes worn down. Others had engine and brake fires but everyone went home at the end of the day with smiles on their faces, some with trophies and some cars with less parts than when they started!

All in all, a great day out!

MG Nation Meet 2023 - Kimber Run

Just a small selection of the images taken from today's Kimber Run though the picturesque Adelaide Hills!

What is a Kimber Run you ask - its an annual car run, held by the MG Car Club of South Australia that celebrates all things Cecil Kimber and takes in the sights of the Adelaide Hills or the Barossa Valley or southern vales - basically, all the beautiful winding roads that classic MGs are at home on! Today's run included some 80 off of the nearly 300 entrants in the National Meeting.

All images here are watermarked with the Nat Meet logo for their website rather than my own normal logo. If you are reposting images from here I'd really appreciated you crediting the site here as all the images (including the 300+ I haven't uploaded!) are available for a small fee if you'd like a clean, full resolution image. Just contact me through here!!

Please enjoy!

Australian MG National Meet

Been a bit quite of late as house renovations have been taking precedence over photographic sales and posts, but what a great way to break the ice for 2023 than the MG Car Club National Meet, held in Adelaide South Australia.

And what a mouth watering display of cars braved the inclement weather and displayed at the Concours event at Wigley Reserve in Glenelg!

Tomorrow its the Kimber Run through the picturesque Adelaide Hills so stay tuned for images from there!

Locked Out, not Knocked Out?

Cobdogla Irrigation and Steam Museum, Christmas Day, 2022

A very sad sight, seeing 40+ years of volunteer work not only beaten by mother nature and the extraordinarily high River Murray, but the way the Museum seem to have been treated by their once long time patron, SA Water, both now with the lock out and into the future with the withdrawal of support and the complete uncertainly of what will happen once the water recedes.

The river, as you can see, is incredibly high. The museum has been closed off to the public and the museum personnel alike, and many of the lovingly restored attractions have been moved to high ground and are no longer able to be stored undercover.

Hopefully the wonderful traction engines, the narrow gauge railway and all of the living history that the Museum has been for its 30+ year of operation can continue on as a major tourist attraction to Cobdogla and the region in general for years to come.

If you care about the museum, contact your local or Federal member and let them know. Contact the Berri Barmera Council and let them know how important it is as a tourist destination and, most of all, drop the Cobdogla Irrigation and Steam Museum and let their members know that you care. They could benefit from some positive messages of support!

All images taken by drone or 600mm lens with 1.2x or 2.0x extender from outside of the museum fences.

Adelaide Rally 2022

A glittering array of modern supercars at the front of the field and cars like these at the rear. I'll always choose a vintage Austin Healey or Abarth over a McLaren or an AMG Black!

An amazing event that a bloody good mate took me and my cameras for an amazing blast though the Adelaide Hills for three days in a stripped out racing Maserati that set car alarms off with three blocks every time he even looked at the throttle! The better start getting worried for next year...

Spectacular sights, amazing cars, generous people and sensational roads through the Adelaide Hills!
