UPS’ Happy Returns Tests AI to Combat Return Fraud 🤖📦

As return fraud becomes an increasing challenge for retailers, UPS’ Happy Returns is stepping up with artificial intelligence-driven solutions to protect businesses and streamline reverse logistics.

In November 2025, the company began piloting two new AI-powered features with select retailers, including fashion brand Everlane. The first tool assigns a risk score to each return request based on customer behavior and shopping patterns. High-risk cases—flagged due to unusual timing, frequency, or anomalies—are reviewed before any refunds are processed.

The second feature, called Return Vision, uses AI-powered image recognition to compare returned items with their original product listings. This helps detect cases of “wardrobing” or product swapping, where customers return a similar but cheaper item to claim a refund.

According to Happy Returns CEO and co-founder David Sobie, this added layer of protection is critical in busy return processing environments, where small differences in stitching, labels, or logos can easily be missed.

A 2025 report by Happy Returns and the National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates that 9% of all returns are fraudulent, with product swapping on the rise. Return Vision can identify subtle mismatches—such as incorrect branding, missing tags, or altered sizing—supporting more accurate refund decisions.

To avoid warehouse congestion, flagged returns are reviewed within 24 hours of arrival. Although fewer than 1% of returns are flagged, each intercepted case saves retailers an average of USD 218 in losses.

Following the post-holiday return surge, Happy Returns plans to expand the Return Vision system in 2026. As more data is collected, the AI models will become even more accurate—strengthening fraud prevention across the entire network.

Founded in 2015 and acquired by UPS in 2023, Happy Returns is a leading reverse logistics platform in the U.S., best known for its Return Bar concept—allowing customers to return items without packaging or labels. The platform now plays a key role in UPS’ strategy to modernize and optimize reverse logistics.

JAL Cargo & JR East Launch Rail–Air Integrated Freight Service 🚄✈️

Japan Airlines Cargo (JAL Cargo) and East Japan Railway Company (JR East) have introduced a new integrated logistics solution combining the Shinkansen high-speed rail network with JAL’s global air cargo system—delivering faster transit times and lower CO₂ emissions.

Launched on January 13, the new service, named JAL de Hako-byun, aims to significantly reduce delivery times to major Asian destinations while promoting greener transportation by shifting cargo from road to rail.

The service connects key stations across Japan—including Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, Shin-Aomori, Morioka, Akita, Sendai, Niigata, Nagano, and Tsuruga—before transferring cargo via air from Tokyo’s Haneda and Narita airports to destinations such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

According to JAL Cargo, transit time from Niigata to Hong Kong has been cut from around 30 hours to just 18 hours, while shipments from Nagano to Malaysia now take 34 hours instead of over 40.

The official rollout follows a successful pilot shipment from Sendai to Singapore in October 2025. The first commercial cargo included premium seafood exported from Tsuruga to Taiwan, seamlessly transferred from rail to air—demonstrating the efficiency of this multimodal solution.

Looking ahead, JAL Cargo and JR East plan to further expand their network and enhance integrated logistics services, setting new benchmarks for speed, sustainability, and reliability.

DHL Supply Chain Strengthens Its Position with a New Returns Processing Network 🔄📦

DHL Supply Chain is gaining a competitive edge with the launch of its new DHL ReTurn Network in North America, designed to ease post-holiday peak pressure and optimize reverse logistics operations.

Introduced in October 2025, the ReTurn Network features 11 multi-client facilities that handle, inspect, and process returned goods across various product categories. Unlike the traditional model of customer-dedicated warehouses, this new approach enables DHL to serve multiple clients under one shared infrastructure—boosting flexibility and efficiency.

According to Thomas Borders, Vice President of ReTurn Network Operations, DHL’s recent acquisitions of Inmar Supply Chain Solutions and IDS Fulfillment laid the foundation for this innovative model. These moves expanded DHL’s reverse logistics assets and strengthened its presence among small and mid-sized customers.

By serving diverse industries with different peak return cycles—such as home improvement, seasonal décor, and retail—DHL can better balance workload fluctuations, optimize labor planning, and control operational costs.

The network also leverages ReSKU, DHL’s proprietary software that standardizes the return assessment process. This ensures consistent quality checks, faster decision-making, and uniform employee training across all facilities.

With consumer expectations rising, reverse logistics is becoming a critical differentiator. A recent NRF and Happy Returns survey revealed that 71% of shoppers are less likely to repurchase after a poor return experience, highlighting the importance of seamless post-purchase services.

DHL’s ReTurn Network is a strong step forward—enhancing efficiency, scalability, and customer satisfaction in today’s fast-changing supply chain landscape.

Hapag-Lloyd Subsidiary Invests in Major Container Port Project in Brazil 🇧🇷⚓

Hanseatic Global Terminals (HGT), a subsidiary of Hapag-Lloyd, has officially signed an agreement with Imetame Group to acquire a 50% stake in Imetame Logística Porto (ILP), a joint venture focused on container terminal operations in Brazil.

Under this partnership, the two companies will jointly develop and operate Hanseatic Global Terminals Aracruz, a state-of-the-art container port on Brazil’s east coast. Designed as both a transshipment hub and a modern import-export gateway, the terminal will play a key role in strengthening regional and global trade connectivity 🌍.

Located in Aracruz, Espírito Santo, the project is planned with a capacity of 1.2 million TEUs per year, a 750-meter quay, and a 17-meter water depth, allowing it to accommodate large container vessels. The terminal will be equipped with advanced container handling technologies to ensure efficient and reliable operations.

According to HGT CEO Dheeraj Bhatia, Latin America is a strategic growth market for both HGT and Hapag-Lloyd. This investment aims to expand the company’s port portfolio while addressing capacity constraints in one of the fastest-growing trade regions.

He also highlighted that the Aracruz terminal will strengthen Brazil’s trade infrastructure, offering exporters and importers more efficient access to global shipping routes.

Etore Selvatici Cavallieri, Chairman of Imetame Group, emphasized that HGT’s global expertise will help deliver high-performance terminal services, create new jobs, and support the development of local businesses—further positioning Brazil as a key player in global trade.

Founded in 2023 and headquartered in Rotterdam, HGT currently holds stakes in over 20 container terminals across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa, with plans to expand to more than 30 terminals by 2030.

Port of Galveston to Complete Major Cargo Complex Upgrade by 2026 ⚓📦

The Port of Galveston, Texas, is set to complete a series of major infrastructure upgrades at its West Port Cargo Complex by 2026, with a total investment of USD 106 million.

According to the Port Authority, this marks the largest waterfront cargo infrastructure investment in decades, following the launch of the port’s fourth cruise terminal at the end of 2025. Currently, Galveston handles over 3 million tons of breakbulk and dry bulk cargo annually, including Ro-Ro shipments and wind turbine components.

One of the key developments involves Berths 38/39, where construction teams are closing off an old water channel and using dredged material to reclaim land. This will significantly expand cargo storage space and create a new operational berth by 2026.

Meanwhile, the closure of the channel and berth expansion at Berths 40/41 is expected to be completed by mid-2026. Once finished, the port will feature a continuous 437-meter quay, capable of accommodating vessels with a 14-meter draft from the second half of 2026 onward.

Onshore, Galveston is also rehabilitating around 2 hectares of terminal space at Berth 41 to replace deteriorated concrete. An obsolete grain elevator has been dismantled to free up additional land, with the newly reclaimed area expected to be fully operational within the next year.

These projects, launched in phases since 2024, are funded through a combination of state support and the port’s own revenues—much of which comes from its rapidly growing cruise tourism business 🚢.

Port officials stated that these upgrades will help diversify revenue streams and unlock the port’s full cargo potential, ensuring long-term growth alongside its booming cruise operations.

DHL Opens a Large-Scale Healthcare Logistics Hub in Pennsylvania 🏥📦

DHL Supply Chain is accelerating its expansion in healthcare logistics with the launch of a 93,000-square-meter distribution center in Annville, Pennsylvania—one of its largest investments in this specialized sector to date.

Designed to improve speed, reliability, and compliance for pharmaceutical and medical shipments across the U.S. East Coast, the new facility is strategically located near major highways. It features temperature-controlled zones for sensitive medicines, solar power systems, and EV charging stations, reinforcing DHL’s commitment to sustainability ⚡🌱.

Once fully operational later this year, the center will also function as a Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ)—helping reduce customs processing times and minimize tariff-related delays for international healthcare shipments.

“As pharmaceutical companies face shifting tariffs, growing cold-chain demands, and stricter compliance requirements, they need logistics partners with proven capabilities,” said Mark Kunar, CEO of DHL Supply Chain North America.
He described the Annville hub as a “major milestone” in DHL’s healthcare logistics strategy.

This development follows DHL’s recent acquisition of SDS Rx, a U.S.-based healthcare last-mile delivery specialist with more than 200 operating locations. The move strengthens DHL’s end-to-end capabilities—especially for specialty pharmacies, long-term care facilities, and hospital systems.

By combining advanced infrastructure with an expanded last-mile network, DHL is positioning itself as a leading force in U.S. healthcare logistics—at a time when demand for regulated, temperature-sensitive, and time-critical medical shipments continues to rise.

Healthcare Logistics Emerges as a Bright Spot in a Soft Transport Market (2025) 🏥📦

Despite a sluggish and uncertain global freight market in 2025, healthcare logistics has clearly stood out as one of the most attractive and resilient segments, drawing strong interest from global logistics giants 🌍.

While many freight sectors continue to struggle after several years of declining rates, healthcare logistics benefits from stable demand, higher margins, and long-term growth drivers such as aging populations and expanding access to medical care. From medical devices and pharmaceuticals to clinical trials, biologics, and cell & gene therapies, investment momentum in this sector continues to accelerate 💊❄️.

Major Global Players Double Down on Healthcare Logistics 🚀

One of the year’s largest deals was completed in November, when UPS acquired Andlauer Healthcare Group—a Canada-based cold chain healthcare logistics provider—for USD 1.6 billion. The acquisition strengthens UPS’s global healthcare network by improving transit times, shipment visibility, and end-to-end service capabilities for pharmaceutical and medical device customers.

Earlier in the year, UPS also expanded its European healthcare footprint through the acquisition of Frigo-Trans in Germany, further reinforcing its position as a global healthcare logistics leader.

DHL Expands Aggressively in Life Sciences & Healthcare 🌱

DHL Group also made significant moves in 2025, completing two major healthcare logistics acquisitions. In April, DHL acquired Cryopdp—a specialist in clinical trials, biologics, and cell & gene therapy logistics—supporting its ambition to become a leading life sciences and healthcare logistics provider by 2030.

Later in September, DHL Supply Chain acquired SDS Rx, a US-based last-mile healthcare delivery company specializing in long-term care facilities, specialty pharmacies, and radiopharmaceuticals. The deal significantly enhances DHL’s same-day and express healthcare delivery capabilities 🚚⏱️.

According to Mark Kunar, CEO of DHL Supply Chain North America, the life sciences and healthcare sector is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 11% through 2030.

Healthcare Logistics Gains Momentum Across Europe 🇬🇧🇪🇺

GXO Logistics, ranked among the top global contract logistics providers, secured a USD 2.5 billion contract to become the new logistics partner for NHS Supply Chain in England and Wales. The win marks a strategic step for GXO to diversify away from retail and consumer goods while strengthening its presence in life sciences logistics.

GXO also completed the acquisition of Wincanton in the UK earlier this year, marking its second healthcare-focused logistics acquisition in Europe in 2025.

A Rapidly Expanding Global Market 📈

According to Allied Market Research, the global third-party healthcare logistics market was valued at USD 246.1 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 502.6 billion by 2034, growing at a CAGR of 7.8% from 2025 to 2034.

FedEx is also capitalizing on this trend, expecting nearly USD 400 million in new healthcare revenue annually within 90 days after March, and targeting approximately USD 9 billion in healthcare-related revenue by the end of fiscal year 2025.

What This Means for the Logistics Industry 🔍

As traditional freight markets remain under pressure, healthcare logistics is redefining growth opportunities—driven by complexity, compliance requirements, and the need for precision, visibility, and reliability. For logistics providers, this segment represents not only resilience but a strategic pathway toward sustainable, high-value growth.

UPS Invests $120 Million in Unloading Robots to Accelerate Logistics Automation 🤖📦

UPS Inc., one of the world’s leading logistics and express delivery companies 🚚🌍, is taking a major step toward automation by investing approximately USD 120 million to purchase 400 unloading robots. These robots, developed by US-based startup Pickle Robot, will be used to unload packages from trucks and containers — one of the most labor-intensive bottlenecks in logistics operations 💪📦.

This move is part of UPS’s broader USD 9 billion automation strategy, aimed at improving operational efficiency ⚙️, reducing labor costs 💰, and strengthening long-term profitability 📈.

Smart Robots, Real-World Impact 🤖⚡

Pickle’s robots feature a robotic arm mounted on a mobile base, capable of autonomously entering containers and lifting parcels weighing up to 50 pounds (22.7 kg) using advanced suction technology 🧲📦.
Each robot can unload a standard truck in about two hours ⏱️ and is expected to pay for itself within 18 months thanks to significant labor savings 💡.

A key advantage is that these robots can be deployed directly inside existing UPS warehouses, without the need for major infrastructure upgrades 🏭— making adoption faster and more cost-effective.

From Pilot Projects to Large-Scale Deployment 🚀

UPS plans to roll out Pickle robots across multiple facilities starting in the second half of 2026, continuing into 2027 📅. This large-scale order follows several years of pilot testing, proving that the robots can operate reliably in real-world logistics environments 🌐.

According to UPS, collaborations with robotics and automation partners help reduce repetitive manual tasks, lower physical strain, and enhance workplace safety for employees 👷‍♂️🦺.

Automation as a Long-Term Strategy 📊

In 2024, UPS announced a four-year, USD 9 billion investment plan in automation across more than 60 facilities in the US, targeting USD 3 billion in cost savings by 2028 💼📉.
The company is also undergoing its largest network restructuring ever, aiming to cut fixed costs, improve margins, and adapt to evolving e-commerce demand 🛒📦.

A Clear Signal for the Logistics Industry 🌍

UPS’s investment sends a strong message to the global logistics sector: automation is no longer optional — it’s a competitive necessity ⚠️. Technologies that enhance speed 🚀, safety 🛡️, and efficiency ⚙️ will continue to reshape supply chains worldwide.
