The White Elephant โ€“ The Largest Double-Hull Tanker Ever Built

Originally named Hellespont Alhambra, this ultra-large crude carrier (ULCC) was constructed in 2002 by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering in South Korea. At 442,470 DWT with a cargo capacity of 513,684 cubic meters, it was the largest double-hull tanker of its time. Nicknamed the "white elephant" due to its wide-bodied white hull, the vessel was designed with 15% more steel than class requirements, extending its service life to 40 years.

Powered by a Wรคrtsilรค 9RTA84T-D engine producing 36,900 kW at 76 rpm, it could achieve a service speed of 16.5 knots. Innovative features included a double-scrubbed inert gas system, a Vent 2D monitoring system, and a closed-circuit camera replacing bridge wings. In 2004, Euronav acquired it, renaming it TI Asia, and in 2009, it was converted into FSO Asia, serving as a floating storage and offloading unit in the Persian Gulf.

Bulk and timber carrier is a ship with aft engine to transport dry bulk cargoes and timbers. The hull structure in way of cargo holds consists of single deck with top side tank, single side shell, double bottom with bilge hopper tank and vertically corrugated or plated transverse bulkhead. Moreover, strong bulwarks and hinged or movable stanchions are fitted on the upper deck sides to stow timbers on the deck, and steel bar sparrings are fitted on the hold frames and transverse bulkheads to prevent hull damage at timber loading/unloading.

Cargo gear is fitted on the board.

Dead weight capacities of almost bulk and timber carriers range 15 000 up to 30 000 tons.

The illustrated ship is a bulk and timber carrier. As a fore mentioned, steel bar sparrings are fitted on the hold frames and the transverse bulkheads.

MATERIALS FOR TANKER CONSTRUCTION. Mild steel is used throughout the structure, but higher tensile steels may also be introduced in the more highly stressed regions of the larger vessels.

Mild steel
As with dry cargo ships it is a requirement that Grade B, D, and E steels be used for the heavier plating of the main hull strength members where the greatest stresses arise in tankers. Grade E plates, which we have equated with the โ€˜crack arrester strakeโ€™ concept, will be seen to be required over the midship region in ships exceeding 250 meters in length and are also required as shown in Table 1.

Higher tensile steel
Higher tensile steels are often used for the deck and bottom regions of the larger tankers, Grades DH and EH being used for the heavier plating.

The use of higher tensile steel leads to a reduction in the scantlings of these structural items with advantages both for the shipbuilder and owner. There is some concern that the thinner material may lead to problems if corrosion occurs, and that the thinner plate may also lead to additional fatigue problems due to excess movement of the structure under the forces encountered. The extent of this plating and section material is indicated in Figure.
