We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the following positions:

Commercial Marine Diesel Technician
We’re looking for an experienced technician with strong knowledge of commercial marine diesel engines, diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and repairs. Commercial marine experience is required.

Boat Deckhand (STCW Required)
We’re seeking a reliable, safety-conscious deckhand to support daily vessel operations, passenger service, docking, line handling, and general deck duties. Applicants must hold a valid STCW certification. Previous commercial marine experience is preferred.

As we mark 40 years of Smith’s Ferry Services, we do so intentionally on the heavenly birthday of our founder, Capt. Ira L. Smith—because this journey would not exist without him.

From building boats as a young boy alongside his father to founding Smith’s Ferry Services in 1986, his vision took shape with the launch of our first vessel, the MV Marie Elise—a defining step that laid the foundation for the company we are today.

For four decades, Smith’s Ferry has been more than transportation. We’ve connected the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, brought families together, supported businesses, and created opportunity across our region. Proudly locally owned and operated, we continue to carry forward a legacy rooted in purpose, family, and community.

Capt. Rikky Baynes took learning beyond the classroom—giving students from the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) Technical and Vocational Education Program an up-close look at the heart of the vessel, right inside the engine room of the iLegend.

From systems to operations, the students gained real insight into what it takes to keep a vessel running safely and efficiently. Experiences like this matter—because they bridge knowledge with real-world application and open doors to future careers in the maritime industry.

For 40 years, Smith’s Ferry has been connecting people, places, and opportunity—and we’re proud to continue investing in the next generation by sharing what we know and creating pathways for growth.
