Before the influencers.

There was Elmer Farnham.

A standout lightweight physique star from York Barbell’s golden era, Farnham was one of the respected young athletes featured in Bob Hoffman’s *Strength & Health* during the late 1930s and early 1940s. In the famed 1939 York Perfect Man Contest, he won the “up to 5’6” class and placed 3rd overall — behind only the legendary John Grimek.

But like so many men of that generation, the iron game was only part of his story.

Elmer Francis Farnham served as a First Lieutenant with Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment during World War II. On June 13, 1944 — just days after D-Day — Farnham was killed in action during the Battle of Graignes in Normandy while observing German positions from a church steeple.

He was 29 years old.

Bob Hoffman and the York crew deeply mourned his loss. Muscletown lost one of its own. America lost one of its best.

This Memorial Day, remember that many of the men who built physical culture’s foundation also answered a far greater call.
