Insights from recent Myrtle Beach Trip (Part 2)

Though many destinations provide opportunities for families with members with disabilities or special needs to enjoy their trip, Myrtle Beach goes beyond that.

The community of Surfside Beach (one of the communities in the Myrtle Beach area) is the first Autism-Friendly Beach; certified by the Champion Autism Network (CAN). Surfside Beach ensures that families feel welcome. The area offers supportive accommodations to inclusive restaurants and activities.

Another way that the destination supports families is the Autism Travel Card. The digital card allows families to discreetly identify as having a member with autism. Participating restaurants, hotels and venues provide special services, such as quiet seating, expedited meals and accommodations for sensory overload. Hotels make sure that the stay is a sensory-friendly experience by adjusting room placements and removing potential triggers. To learn more about the app, go to: https://autismtravel.club/

Insights from my recent trip to Myrtle Beach, SC (Part 1)

* Myrtle Beach is one of the communities that make up The Grand Strand (a term created 75 years ago for the 60 miles of beaches stretching from the North Carolina state line to Georgetown County). There are 14 coastal communities - each with their own unique character and charm.

* Though I was only there for a couple of days, it would have been beneficial to have a rental car. I could have gone to the Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet, SC to experience the arboretum, sculpture garden, zoo/family farm and other experiences there.

* When the weather is less than ideal to fish, go to the beach or play golf/miniature golf, there are other things to do in Myrtle Beach. There are family-friendly options on the boardwalk and museums around that area (i.e. Ripley's Aquarium of Myrtle Beach)

* There is an app I downloaded called Monster (the digital form of the Monster Coupon Book). The app provides an opportunity to save on the categories - attractions, dining, golf/miniature golf, shopping, sites and tours, and theaters/nightlife.

I have attached some photos from my trip to share with you.

Did you know....

There are many famous parkways/highways throughout the United States. Some of the best and well known ones that the whole family can enjoy are:

* Blue Ridge Parkway - Connects Shenandoah National Park to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Parkway begins the 469 miles at Rockfish Gap, VA and winds its way down to Cherokee, NC.

*Pacific Coast Highway - The Highway begins its over 600 miles at Leggett in North California and ends in Dana Point in Southern California.

*Route 66 - (perhaps the most iconic route) is celebrating its Centennial Birthday this year! The route begins in Chicago, Illinois and goes through Missouri, a small section of southeast Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona before ending in Los Angeles, CA.

Note: The attached photos are ones I took during my visit to Williams, Arizona. The mural shown commemorates William's distinction as the final Route 66 town to be bypassed by Interstate 40 (a modern bypass the enables travelers to pass quickly through the towns and attractions that were once part of the Route 66 experience).

There are some approaches to determine when and where to travel? Many families struggle with this issue.

One approach is to use events like the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta held the first week of October every year or The Calgary Stampede event held every year in July, to help determine when and where to travel.

Another approach is to visit locations where popular TV and movies are filmed. Some destinations may be ideal to visit during specific seasons or months. An example of this is visiting the locations used to film the original Yellowstone show and the spin-offs.

I have used the approach of looking for events to plan when and where to travel for myself. I planned my trip to New Mexico around the 2023 Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta.

What approach do you think would work for you?

Did you know.....

The popular sport of pickleball was developed by two men in Bainbridge Island, WA (near Seattle) in 1965.

The idea came about when the two men saw there families were sitting around with nothing to do. Using equipment from other games, the men improvised and created a new game. With the help of a third man the rules were created based on the game of badminton.

Pickleball was created to provide a game that the whole family can play together.

Speaking of families....there are family-friendly resorts that offer pickleball as an activity.

I conducted research on that type of resort so you didn't have to.

DM me if you would like assistance in combining pickleball with your family trip

Flying with children of various ages can be stressful.

I wanted to share some tips to (that will hopefully) make traveling by air as a family a bit easier.

Do you have any additional tips or suggestions you would like to share?

Did you know....

There are companies that offer guided tours for a "stress free" experience?

The guided tours are all inclusive; the trip typically includes the following features (may vary by company):

* Motorcoach Bus for transportation to all destinations part of the tour
* Tour Director to handle logistics and ensures the safety of the travelers
* Hotel accommodations
* Meals (number of breakfasts, lunches and dinners determined by the length of the tour/the itinerary)
* Unique experiences that the company offers
* Free time to explore destinations
* Airfare (may be able to be added to the selected itinerary

I was fortunate to experience a motorcoach tour (customized for travel agents) that included all of the above features. The itinerary included visits to Las Vegas, NV for an overnight stay, Sedona, AZ, Cameron, AZ for lunch on the way to the Grand Canyon National Park, Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park.
Note: I have attached some of my personal photos from that trip.

The summary of my experience is very detailed so if you are interested in obtaining the details comment "motorcoach" below.

Once you comment below, I will send you a message on Facebook Messenger. Please make sure to look out for it.

I can't wait to share the details with you!

Did you know....

There are U.S. cities that were intentionally designed and inspired by European architecture, culture and traditions. Examples of those cities are:

Frankenmuth, Michigan - While visiting the city (the city was founded in 1845 by German missionaries) visitors to the city can hear German spoken, explore cultural traditions and enjoy centuries-old influences.

St. Augustine, Florida - is the oldest occupied European -established settlement in the U.S. The ornate facades, historic courtyards, centuries-old landmarks, walled-in gardens and pedestrian-friendly streets create a Mediterranean atmosphere.

There is a destination other than Niagara Falls that is shares by both in the U.S. and Canada?

The destination is called 1000 Islands (pronounced "Thousand Islands") is located along the border between northern New York state (USA) and southeastern Ontario (Canada)?

The Thousand Islands International Bridge [opened in 1938 by Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt as a symbol of goodwill and alliance between the U.S. and Canada] is a 4,500-foot suspension bridge that provides easy passage between the two countries - linking I-81 and Highway 401 in Ontario.

Interested in learning more about the communities in the U.S. and/or in Canada, types of transportation, the numerous experiences and places to stay?
