What would you do if a medical concern appeared 24 hours before your family was supposed to fly to Seattle for an Alaska cruise?

That happened to us before sailing on Norwegian Encore with our then-14-year-old son.

There was a preliminary diagnosis, a great deal of uncertainty, and very little time to make decisions. We scrambled to arrange a wheelchair and coordinate accessibility help before we even boarded the plane.

It was not exactly the calm pre-cruise countdown most parents imagine. Apparently, our itinerary needed a plot twist.

The trip still worked out beautifully. We adjusted, accepted help, and made wonderful memories together in Alaska.

But the experience reinforced why I encourage travelers to consider travel protection when they book: not because we expect something to go wrong, and not because protection guarantees every expense will be covered. Policies, exclusions, coverage limits, and deadlines all matter.

It matters because life does not check your vacation calendar first. Illness, injury, delays, and unexpected changes can happen even when every detail has been carefully planned.

Travel protection is one part of a well-planned trip. So is knowing what your policy actually covers before you need it.
