📍 Beyond the Vineyard: A New Chapter Begins

The African American Heritage Trail began on Martha’s Vineyard—but it doesn’t end there.

On November 18, we will celebrate a powerful milestone: the dedication of our first off-island plaque, honoring Dr. James G. Townsel—a pioneering African American neuroscientist, mentor, and advocate for equity in science and healthcare.

His plaque will be placed in Woods Hole, marking not only his legacy at the Marine Biological Laboratory but the Trail’s expanding mission:
To preserve, uplift, and share Black history wherever it lives.

This is more than a plaque.
This is a movement—beyond the beach, beyond the island, and beyond what’s been remembered until now.
