UTAH ADVENTURES PART 1
Utah is an amaizng state with lots of outdoor recreation and various topography - high desert, red rocks, mountains - you name it, they've got it! We have been fortunate to visit the "Mighty 5" in Utah - Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Arches and Canyonlands! We have loved visiting the Capitol and surrounding areas of Salt Lake City and visiting Temple Square as well. This past week we had our BEST adventure in Utah! (This is just part 1, keep checking back for Part 2)
We started out by visiting the Great Salt Lake! The Great Salt Lake is the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere and the eighth-largest terminal lake in the world. In all our visits to SLC, this was the first time we ventured out there. We tried to access the lake through Great Salt Lake State Park, however they close at 5:00 p.m. and we arrived at 4:55 (don't do this - plan accordingly)! The ranger directed us down the road to walk out towards Black Rock. Black Rock was the first recreational bathing in the Great Salt Lake in recorded history and remnants of the resort are still there. (year 1847)
The path to the site is a little bumpy for a wheelchair, but we managed just fine. With beautiful views the hike was pleasant and interesting. Now, lets talk accessing the lake - that is a bit difficult for a power wheelchair due to some marshy conditions, but we were able to drive out a little closer on a salt flat area where M was able to run around and enjoy the beautiul day and views! This area is definitely not deemed ADA, but with a little help it is doable and a must to see when in SLC! We also still have salty mud on the tires!
This was just the beginning of our adventure in Salt Lake City.....STAY TUNED as the BEST part is yet to come......
