Dedicated to Civil War veterans, the historic community event space and theater for the City of Melrose was experiencing ongoing deficiencies related to its building envelope causing interior deterioration.
The building is primarily built of brick masonry back-up wall and incorporates an exterior Quincy granite façade utilizing salvaged granite from the 1830 Boston Courthouse.
The project incorporated restoration of the decorative stonework, intricate brass ornamentation, and original wood windows. The building is located in the Downtown Melrose Historic District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The project required compliance with the U.S. Department of Interiors preservation guidelines for the historic restoration of stone masonry, wood windows, and metalwork as well as local and state Historic Commission approvals.

This week marks Gale’s 60th Anniversary!

Gale Engineering, Inc. was founded in 1964 by Charles E. Gale, a Civil Engineer and Surveyor. At that time, Gale was located in Braintree, Massachusetts and offered strictly Civil and Survey services. Under Charles’ expert leadership, the firm grew steadily, and in 1977 introduced the Building Envelope Technology discipline. Other disciplines followed (architecture, structural engineering and aviation engineering), necessitating Gale’s name change to “Gale Associates, Inc.” in 1987. That same year Gale expanded geographically by opening an office in Maryland. Gale’s continued growth allowed for expansion into other states, and today Gale has seven offices along the east coast.

As we start a new decade, we would like to recognize our hardworking and dedicated employees, both past and present, who have helped Gale become what it is today. We would also like to thank our clients, colleagues, and friends for their continued support.

Here's to 60 more!

The Josiah Quincy Elementary School was designed by The Architects Collaborative in 1974. The School encompasses a full block in Boston’s Chinatown neighborhood. The building is largely composed of split-face concrete masonry unit (CMU) veneer with pre-cast and cast-in-place concrete elements. Bright, decorative porcelain enamel panels and orange-painted window and door assemblies provide color throughout the School. The building includes multiple outdoor plaza roof areas that are used by the School population and community.

The City of Boston engaged Gale to perform a systematic evaluation of the entire building enclosure system to renovate and improve the performance of the building enclosure. The renovations included a new roof, plaza roof, window and door replacement, and concrete/masonry repairs.

Since the plaza is utilized as a playground and outdoor space, a new plaza layout was developed to enliven the space and incorporated new color schemes using both rubber and turf top pavers to improve the play and outdoor classroom space for the students and community.

Opened in 1969, the New England Aquarium on Long Wharf in Boston, Massachusetts is a nonprofit research and conservation organization that aims through its exhibits, experiences, and research to protect the ocean. The precast concrete building has gone through many renovations and upgrades throughout the years. Our most recent work included an evaluation, engineering, design, and preparation of drawings and technical specifications for the replacement of the roof systems; stabilization and repairs to the exterior concrete elements; sealant replacement; the application of an elastomeric coating over the exterior walls; and coordination of a Mechanical/Electrical/Plumbing consultant for the HVAC upgrades.

Happy Engineers Week!

National Engineers week was founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers. This year’s theme, “Welcome to the Future,” is about celebrating today’s achievements and paving the way for a brighter and more diverse future in engineering. The purpose of National Engineers Week is to call attention to the contributions engineers make to our society and our lives. It is also a time for engineers to emphasize the importance of learning math, science, and technical skills.

Gale would like to take this opportunity to honor not only our amazing Engineers, but all our technical staff – Architects, Planners and Landscape Architects. This week, we celebrate you! Thank you for all that you do for our company and our profession. Gale will continue to support and promote engineering and technical disciplines as we pave the way for the future!

In honor of Black History Month, we are pleased to celebrate Black members of the Engineering Community, and their important contributions to the field:

General Hugh G. Robinson was the first African American general officer in the US Army Corps of Engineers. He earned his master’s degree in civil engineering from MIT and in 1965 was appointed military aide to President Lyndon B. Johnson, becoming the first African American to serve in that role. General Robinson was a member of ACEC, and the National Society of Professional Engineers. For his time in the military, he earned an Air Medal, Bronze Star and the Legion of Merit and Army Commendation Medal.
