Our trio of New York Central heritage locomotives lead a special photo freight consist on the former Water Level Route, seen passing the cliffs just east of Little Falls. The train is deadheading back to Utica following a weekend long event in Albany. The three are original NYC locomotives, restored to their original paint and numbers by our team of talented paint shop employees.

We have recently taken delivery of MHWA 2453, an Alco C425 originally built for the Erie-Lackawanna. It was immediately put into service on the Northern Division, its first assignment being a special generator move from the CSX interchange in Utica to the recently reopened Lyons Falls Paper Co., Inc. mill in the village of Lyons Falls.

ALCO’s on the main line!

In order to service our customers in Rome, NY, our trains need to operate over a 10-mile stretch of CSX’s Mohawk Subdivision between our yard in Utica and the Rome Branch just west of Reber Road. On occasion, trains will have to reverse out of home rails into CSX at CP-235 and then head west on the former NYC main line, passing the historic Utica Union Station in the process. This affords a rare opportunity to see vintage ALCO locomotives passing the historic landmark at 50mph, the maximum allowed track speed through the area! Thanks to an area photographer, we get to see one of our trains passing through on Track 1 with a long string of Rome-bound cars in tow.

We are seeking to acquire Mohawk Adirondack & Northern C425 #2453 for use on our Northern Division freight trains. As traffic increases on our line, we are realizing thneed for more motive power to handle the increases in tonnage over our system. Anyone who may have this locomotive available please contact us. The item numbers are listed below for reference. Either one is fine as long as it’s in good working condition.

2453 would be joining sister locomotive 2456, BC Rail heritage painted 2455, and ex-BCR M420W 2042 on our Utica, NY based freight trains.
