Exchange between a friend and I who booked her own trip.

Me: “How was your trip?”
Friend: “Pretty good even though we couldn’t use the beach and it stunk”
Me: “Where did you stay?”
Friend: “[insert resort name]”
Me: “Oh yeah, I could’ve told you that. That area gets a lot of sargassum this time of year”
Friend: “Why didn’t you tell me that?”
Me: “Ummmm…..it’s literally the first thing I would’ve told you had I known you were planning a trip. I would’ve advised you to go north of that area.”

Here’s your homework this week (even if you don’t have a trip in the books!): check the expiration date on your passports! Some countries require 6-months validity PAST your travel dates. And some airlines do too (we’re looking at you, Delta 😉) - watch out if you get a Delta gate agent who woke up on the wrong side of the bed who decides to enforce it as their rule supersedes a country’s requirement.

A new study suggests that taking a vacation every two months may be one of the most effective ways to reduce stress and prevent burnout. According to 2025 research published in the paper Maximizing Recovery: The Superiority of Frequent Vacations, short and regular getaways are more beneficial than saving all your time off for one long annual trip.

Since the positive effects of a vacation often fade within just a few weeks, regular time away could be key to maintaining both mental health and productivity.
