Rusk County Highway Department To work cooperatively in promoting, developing, and prioritizing improvements to and safety of State and County Highways in Rusk County.

The Highway Department carries out general and winter maintenance in order to fulfill its responsibilities to maintain travel safety and convenience on all county and state highways, in addition to a number of local roads in Rusk County. General maintenance includes: patching, crack filling and replacement of pavement; shoulder maintenance, roadside mowing and brush control; bridge and culvert mai

ntenance; litter and trash pickup; guard rail installation and repair; signing’ pavement marking; traffic control, and traffic signal maintenance. Winter maintenance includes; installation of snow fence; ice control; salting and sanding; snowplowing, and snow removal. Additionally, the department carries out road construction, pavement resurfacing (blacktopping), plus bridge and culvert repair and installation, and bridge inspections. Planning, engineering and administration are also an essential function of the department.

NOTICE

SPRING LOAD RESTRICTIONS

Pursuant to Wisconsin Statutes 349.16, Rusk County highway season weight restrictions will become effective FRIDAY MARCH 6, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. Adjustment to the proposed effective date may be considered contingent upon weather conditions.

The Rusk County Highway weight restrictions for 2026 shall be set at 4 Tons per Axle – 20 Ton Gross. This applies to all County Trunk Highways in Rusk County except for:

• CTH “I” from Highway 8 south and west to Highway 27.
• CTH “G” from Ladysmith south and east to CTH “I”.
• CTH “D” from Highway 27 East to the Taylor County Line

This is a critical period of time for the county highways and we request support and cooperation for this temporary load limit. The Rusk County Highway Department will be enforcing the posted seasonal weight limits and penalties may be imposed under sec. 348.21, Wis. Statutes for violations.
