When approaching a stopped emergency vehicle, highway maintenance vehicle, Turnpike maintenance vehicle, licensed wrecker displaying flashing lights, or any vehicle with hazard lights flashing:
• On multi-lane roads: Move over one lane away from the stopped vehicle when it is safe to do so. If changing lanes is unsafe or impossible, slow to a safe speed and proceed with caution.
• On two-lane roads, or when a lane change is not possible: Slow to a safe speed and proceed with caution.
Please remember this when you see emergency vehicles, tow trucks, maintenance workers, or any vehicle stopped on the shoulder. You never know what situation first responders, wrecker operators, maintenance workers, or other motorists may be dealing with just a few feet from passing traffic. If you can move over, do so. If you can't, slow down. Giving them space to work safely could save a life.
