The Great Lakes Region is one of the most stunning areas of the country. Gazing over the water into the horizon, it can be hard to believe youโ€™re not standing at the shores of an ocean.

But the region is as expansive as the lakes, covering eight states from Minnesota to New York. Deciding where to go and what to see can be a tough challenge, indeed.

It sure was tough to decide what to feature in this list. Here are our recommendations for five places around the Great Lakes you canโ€™t afford to miss.

๐Ÿ“ Hagerstown, Maryland Shamrock Tourยฎ

The weather has beaten the Appalachian Mountains for millions of years. Long-term erosion has rounded their shoulders and worn away once-high summits. In addition, prodigious annual rainfall has stimulated second-growth forests, invigorated croplands in the valleys, and bolstered animal populations. More recentlyโ€”geologically speakingโ€”human settlements have created a bountiful assemblage of paved backroads that climb over mountain ridges, follow meandering valley streams, and lead to historical locations both big and small.

This Shamrock Tourยฎ is based in historical Hagerstown, MD, which has a population of around 40,000. Itโ€™s big enough to meet our essential touring needs, but not so big as to be overpowering with everyday traffic. And, itโ€™s ideally located for exploring the Appalachian ridges and valleys in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. So, kickstands upโ€”here we go!

In our Classic Roads articles, we typically highlight a specific enjoyable motorcycling road in the U.S., or sometimes elsewhere in the world. This time, though, Iโ€™ll be talking about two roads. Itโ€™s cats living with dogs, complete anarchy!

Well, the situationโ€™s not quite so badโ€”the two roads form one continuous, scenic, and fun 25-mile motorcycling route. Weโ€™re talking about North Carolina SR 261 and Tennessee SR 143, which stretch through the Roan Mountain State Park.

The southern end of this ride is in Bakersville, NC, where SR 261 branches off of SR 662. Youโ€™ll start the ride on a curvy rural road, passing sprawling farmland as you gradually ascend in altitude.

Once you pass Hidden Creek, the climb gets steeper, and you begin to run into some serious twists. This is among the curviest rides in the Southeast, so make sure your cornering skills are honed.

Several years ago, whilst on a motorcycle tour along the Eastern Sierra from San Francisco to Los Angeles, my wife Liz and I met a fellow biker from Europe in a roadside cafe. As we swapped many touring stories, he told us about one of his favorite rides in North Americaโ€”the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP).

We had to admit that we had never heard of it. Finally, on a Thursday morning in mid-May many years later, having ridden up from Atlanta, GA, on two Hondas, we found ourselves embedded in endless emerald perfection.
