On Monday we said an RS4K second grader can tell you why a metal spoon gets hot. Here it is, in three sentences you can use tonight.
Heat is atoms jiggling in place, at random, in every direction.
Warm one end and those atoms jiggle harder, and every random bump hands a little of the extra jiggling to a neighbor.
Metal spreads it quickly because it also has loose electrons rattling around between the atoms, bouncing every which way, until the handle is jiggling too.
Here is the part RS4K always teaches. Nothing travels up the spoon. No electron makes the trip. Heat is random motion, not a current, and what spreads is the jiggling.
Wood has no loose electrons and its atoms are locked into long molecules, so the jiggling spreads far too slowly to feel.
Try it. A metal spoon and a wooden spoon in the same mug of hot water. Wait a minute. Touch both handles.
