Today leaders from all over the Bay area met to discuss moving forward with a major rail project in Tampa Bay. It would use underused CSX tracks to build commuter and or urban rail connecting major parts of the entire region. Similar to Sun-Rail and Tri-Rail before it.

It's a long way from a done deal, and for how we can make sure this is successful this blog post does an amazing job of explaining how we can learn the lessons of these projects to make it a success.

Another major business leader -- Richard Gonzmart -- says he's willing to be a part and help pay for Light Rail.

More and more employers and major private sector people are willing to be a part of a solution. It's time for our leadership to stop with the distractions from partisan political groups and focus on the people & our economy and join them.

Interesting news from the Tampa Bay Times. It's a good overview of some of the possibilities of working with CSX. But it is not our only option -- either way we will need real leadership from the Commission and Cities to make anything possible.

Using CSX tracks has been part of the plan for Hillsborough County for over 30 years. It's good that CSX is willing to talk and a lot of the hard work is already done in terms of insurance and deal structure thanks to Orlando. But the local leaders will have to do something first.

There are 97 miles of railroad track connecting the downtowns of Clearwater, St. Petersburg and Tampa. The steel grating links Tampa International Airport to the University of South Florida, stretches across four counties and reaches as far north as Brooksville.

Yesterday the Hillsborough county commission asked for a fourth review of the Go Hillsborough transportation planning & outreach contract. This was the right thing to do. We need transparency in all parts of transportation.

It was great to see Commissioners call the questions about Go Hillsborough what they are: part of a long history of attacks on the people and process of transportation planning that leads to silencing citizens. It is vital this audit joins the other three reviews to ensure the public understands that these issues and accusations are unrelated to the plan and what citizens need.

They also made it clear this does not invalidate a plan that thousands of citizens and hundreds of professionals has been going on for years. No one has made a case that the product has been affected at all by these political accusations. All of the input was overseen by the Hillsborough Elections Supervisor, County Employees, and contractors. The Times has even reviewed every single sheet and posted them on the web.

We had our own issues with parts of the outreach -- and have made those clear before. But, it doesn't change the fact that this plan that funds transit 2x more than new road capacity, funds bike/walk by more than $121 million, and creates 24 new bus routes. Those are more important than any political issue. Those things means getting people to work, making our lives better, and building a future of transportation options for Hillsborough.

Much has been discussed about the only news media to make these accusations and we feel it is important we tell you our thoughts about it.

The first person to speak in the WTSP story was someone who has personally attacked leaders and volunteers of Connect Tampa Bay -- over and over. It was no surprise that the reporter then repeated many erroneous claims throughout the story that person has made.

Let us make this clear: Every single mention of Connect Tampa Bay in his story had to be corrected -- one was so erroneous it was removed. None of these things came up in numerous conversations and emails with the reporter as we gave significant research assistance to the story over the past year.

In recent weeks this process has gotten nasty. That doesn't surprise anyone here. From day one individuals has yelled at our volunteers for signing up supporters, called our allies N***s, and tried to make insane claims about our goals.

Connect Tampa Bay starts and ends with the facts and the people who join us and stand up. We asked for this process that people have a say -- and won. We asked for a transportation firm to lead the planning & outreach not a political consultant before anyone else -- and won. We demanded more transit than 36% -- and won. But we never did it by attacking or smearing leaders, government officials, and other experts as criminals, s***s, and n***s -- as we have witnessed over and over again.

Responding to these tactics by stopping the process and stopping talking to the people about the choices they have is a horrible idea. Stopping making the plan better would be a horrible choice. We are glad the commission did not.

We are also glad the commission moved forward with a fourth review: Lets get the facts straight, do a clear review & audit. And then move forward. If there was something wrong, move forward by fixing the issue and then fix transportation. If nothing was done wrong, move forward with Go Hillsborough and build clear citizen & outside expert reviews built into every part of the process and fix transportation.

Pulling back before a review is complete would be a horrible mistake and only serve embolden those that would silence the thousands of citizens that have taken part in Go Hillsborough.

Hot, car obsessed cities all over the country are doing what Tampa Bay is not as Michael Van Sickler says:

"For those of us stranded in highway traffic here in Tampa Bay, where we're told repeatedly that light rail just won't work here, rail's success in these particular cities might come as a surprise...

Phoenix voters just approved a tax hike for more light rail. And Dallas has more light rail miles than any other city in the country and wants many, many more.

Los Angeles has more riders per day than any other city except Boston.

Houston carries more light rail riders per mile than any system except for Boston and San Francisco.

Denver is building a light rail system second-only in size to what L.A.'s system plans to be."

The new organization Walk Bike Tampa reminds everyone of the travesty that our roads are and the tragedy they bring to our community.

Hillsborough Ave is controlled by the Florida Department of Transportation. If any government agency witnessed 3 deaths in 31 hours in one area of their jurisdiction we would call for an investigation. Instead we talk about how they can continue to spend money in the same way and then billions on express lanes.

Follow the great work that Walk/Bike Tampa is doing & read the stories.

Go Hillsborough Update: We’ve gotten lots of questions about Go Hillsborough and most boil down to: “What do you think?”

Until last week the answer was “We don’t know.” Lots of people participated in the process, but we didn’t have specifics. We do now. It includes rail, lots of bike/walk money, and more complete streets projects than road capacity projects.

Instead of boring with stats, we put together handy infographic to show what were talking about.

It’s clear: Go Hillsborough will move Hillsborough and our region in a new direction and it allows us to reject the status quo. But there is better news: we have time to make it better.

Between now and October there are 40 more meetings and over 50 days for you to email your commissioners, the mayor and more. There could be less road projects in the City of Tampa & more choices, the county could commit to Mobility Fees first, and of course it could fully fund all of our transit needs by asking the voters for a penny instead of half of one.

Take a look at GoHillsborough.org or just email your thoughts on what our highest priority should be:

Here's an update on our post from two weeks ago, when we asked you to email Al Higginbotham because he called asking your opinion about a one cent sales tax increase a “disaster” and said “it’s why Americans don’t trust government.” In addition, Commissioner Crist questioned the timing.

They both cited the questions they received for the reasons for their comments – according to public records they both received two emails in opposition and no phone messages. Commissioner Crist has since clarified his concern, and said he simply wanted to be informed beforehand.

In sharp contrast, Higginbotham hasn’t spoken again on the issue – leaving his statements of “disaster” hanging out there. After digging, records show his staff has responded to some emails, *but only to people who emailed in opposition*.

He promised the voters of Hillsborough County that he would support the recommendation of the PLG and these kind of moves are concerning. E-mail him to tell him you expect him to keep his promise, maybe he’ll also respond to those that support transportation investment this time:

Commissioner Higginbotham says Administrator Merrill asking you what you want Go Hillsborough plan is a "disaster" & confirms Americans’ distrust of government. Tell him you want to be heard: https://webappsnet.hillsboroughcounty.org/Forms/BOCC/ContactCommissioners

He said all this in Tampa Tribune today. However, Higginbotham promised to make transportation his priority, to listen to the people, and vote for the recommendation of the entire PLG when he ran for office 2 years ago. The photos is from the ad where he named transportation a key priority. Now this.

Now he's blasting respected County Administrator Merrill for simply wanting to make sure the public has their say. Comments from politicians like this is why citizens don't trust government.

In fact 1 cent sales tax got the most votes in the previous meeting and citizens have a lot of projects they want done.

It's time for us to be heard loudly. We need to stand up and demand the people be heard, Commissioner. If we're heard we might start to trust.

Email Commissioner Higginbotham now and tell him to keep his promises & tell them all it doesn't hurt to listen to the people. Go to this link: https://webappsnet.hillsboroughcounty.org/Forms/BOCC/ContactCommissioners
