Today, on what would’ve been my father’s birthday, I’m glad to finally share the story behind MDT.
The name MDT stands for “Mad Dog” Thornton — my father’s nickname — and me, Dawn Thornton.
MDT was born out of grief, grit, and a deep desire to create something lasting. Our purple and gold branding colors? That’s in honor of Dad’s Omega Psi Phi fraternity roots.
The advice my dad gave me the night before his triple bypass surgery was simple but profound: “Baby Girl, Work as hard on yourself as you do for others.” I had no idea that would be the last time I’d ever hear his voice but that wisdom has never left me.
So I wrote the vision. And made it plain. (There was a giant Post-it note on the dining wall and I’m still checking off boxes!)
Since launching:
• We’ve bought equipment (and lost and broke some, too)
• Supported disaster relief efforts for both Milton and Helene
• Hauled loads for residential & commercial construction sites and completed clean-outs
• Built some solid connections along the way with some really cool folks!
My son, the little guy once riding on my dad’s shoulders has been right there, learning the ropes and helping bring this dream to life. This is legacy in motion. I’m grateful my father taught me the game of chasing big trucks long ago - it’s about respect and freedom. There’s lots of open road to cover and we are learning one haul at a time.
My father once said: “If you wanna run with the big dogs, get off the porch.”
So this is me. Finally jumping off the porch.
Running full speed ( like a girl 😉).
In honor of Mad Dog. 🐾
