Cartagena de Indias was the colonial treasure chest of the Americas. For Colombia, its old city is an icon of African Caribbean vibrancy with its preserved wall which protected the city from pirates. Perched on the ocean, it is also a destination for views, beaches, and an ecclectic nightlife.

The old city is filled with boutique hotels and the water front with large luxury chains. For wheelchair accessibility - Cartagena is not ready for prime time yet. However, it is genuinely trying how to juxtapose this into old structures and plan to include with new ones. It is exciting times.Cartagena is a beach and party city with the ability to find sanctuaries and beautiful cultural moments.

You can eat and drink your way through the city. Two of my meals were chef driven menus catered to my gluten-free diet and lovely. The coffee and fruit tastings underscored the biodiversity of Colombia and the science of the best bite or sip. I definitely need to up my coffee brewing techniques.

If you use common sense - be aware of surroundings, don’t flaunt wealth and refrain from solicit prostitutes and drugs 😜… your should be as safe as in many comparably sized US cities.

Trying to go to Costa Rica in peak season and can’t find a room or too expensive? Try Cartagena. If looking at a Caribbean Island with same constraints … consider Cartagena’s nearby island Baru instead or other Comombian islands such as San Andres or Providencia.

While in someplaces in the world, many currently feel discouragement and a sense of recoil, the optimism of and growth mindset of Colombia is palpable in Barranquilla. Since the peace agreement in 2016 and entrance into greater stability, Barranquilla has invested deeply into infrastructure and accessibility. Three examples of this are:
- The 3 mile river walk, El Gran Malecon along the Magdalena River.
- The mangrove ecopark, Mallorquín
- Puerto Mocho beach where the Magdalena River meets the Caribbean.
All are completely renovated and wheelchair accessible, from bathrooms to beach wheelchair. Even more impressive to me. While some beautiful resorts are available in the Caribbean - they are not available to the locals. These Colombian locations not only are open but are affordable, being utilized, and revitalizing Barranquilla on multiple levels.
Ever want to go to Carnival? Barranquilla is the second largest celebration in the world, next to Rio. Lovely hotels and lots to do!
The last week has been pretty intense and I still have 4 days left. Part of my leap into this trip at last minute was wanting to become a specialist in Colombia. In travelling with my colleagues it has reiterated to me that no trip is one size fits all. You can AI your itinerary and book cheaply with online travel sites - but the human will always be the center: the person wanting to travel and their personal story, my ability to listen and act, and my partners at Fora and on the ground.

Day one in Bogota, Colombia on FAMiliarization trip. My travel to get here was eventful and a gentle reminder to lean into flexibility! 1. Malfunction in my CLEAR subscription 2. Separately - got dinged in security and was pulled out of line into a different area to be screened privately 3. Medical Emergency on board flight to Dallas. Pretty scary. 4. Aborted take-off from Dallas to Bogota (that was a new on)- back to gate. 5. Got in at 3 am. It is a big city. Today,I laid low to protect my energy for the week ahead and keep up on work. Got my nails done (1/4 of local price) in a local salon and practiced my Spanish. Got good coffee. Lots of police with machine guns. Very few people speak English, so I am habla-ing away in my broken Spanish with great confidence. Beautiful sunset from my room. Met my colleagues for the week. I have a lot to learn from them.
