NIH scientists, arts experts take note of music’s impact on brain

It's pretty cool when science catches up to what we've always known.

Playing and listening to music can change the brain — and researchers are taking note. Emmeline Edwards, director of the Extramural Research Division at the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health at the National Institutes of Health, talks about the impact of music on the brain.

Upworthy

Love this...and a music therapist came up with the idea! I can only imagine playing music or singing songs that connect to the visuals they are seeing...

They thought they'd never be able to travel again... and then they found a new way to revisit their favorite places across the globe.

A Harvard study found that people from different cultures know intrinsically the intention of a piece of music from a completely different culture. Suggesting that the music is more universal than culture. Take a quiz yourself at the end of this article and share with friends!!

“It seems like all humans make music in some way or another. But there’s not great empirical evidence for whether or not the different types of music they make share features across cultures... in some cases, the answer is yes.”

Kiki Dee Band - I got the music in me 1974

January is Music Therapy Social Media Advocacy month! The goal is to spread the news about the power of music therapy as a clinical intervention for a wide spectrum of physical, emotional, and mental challenges. And to awaken insurance companies to cover this treatment! Those of us training in and working in the field are to share a song that represents the power of music to them. This song came to mind immediately! #mtadvocacy

Fascinating article about treating PTSD "fusing elements of psychology, spirituality, neurobiology and shamanic “power animals.” This article calls it 'radical', but it's not unlike what original cultures have done for 100s of years...

A group of psychologists say body-oriented therapies can heal the deepest layers of the brain—and they're hoping neuroscience will prove them right.

Wow....

This is something you have to listen to. In 1992 Jim Wilson got the idea to slow down a recording of chirping crickets. The revealed sound simply was called "Gods cricket chorus". The hidden beauty of nature is astonishing, and we are all part of it! Maybe a reason to think again before squashing an insect too :)

General information

Welcome to Sound Guidance™ Sound, including music, has been used for therapeutic purposes in different cultures around the world for hundreds of years. Modern science is just now able to quantify the effects of sound on the human body and brain, which has lead to a re-awakening of this field. We use sound and music nearly every day in ways that are so habitual we don't even think twice about it. But now it's time to (re)capture the impact it can make in our lives, channel it and apply it in ways that bring about improved happiness, wellness and balance.
