Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan: the only place where “nightlife” means deciding which gas station has the freshest roller hot dogs.

This town has two seasons:

1. Winter
2. Pothole season

People in the Soo don’t give directions with street names. It’s always:
“Go past the old Kmart, turn where Shopko used to be, and if you hit a pothole deep enough to qualify as a Great Lake, you’re there.”

The Soo is so isolated that when someone says they’re “going downstate,” it sounds like they’re emigrating.

Everybody acts tough until the first tourist asks how to pronounce “Sault.” Then suddenly the entire town becomes a French linguistics professor.
“It’s pronounced Soo, actually.”

The economy runs entirely on:

* tourists watching freighters
* fudge shops
* people crossing the bridge because literally anything is cheaper in Canada

The Soo Locks are basically the town’s version of Times Square.
“Wanna do something tonight?”
“Yeah, let’s go stare at a boat for 45 minutes.”

And somehow every local has three jobs:
snowblower operator, deer hunter, and unpaid Facebook weather analyst.

Dating in Sault Ste. Marie is wild because your ex isn’t just your ex — they’re also your cashier at Meijer, your cousin’s coworker, and somehow on your beer league hockey team.

Sault Ste. Marie is the pothole capital of America.
MDOT doesn’t repair roads up there — they just add orange cones and hope winter finishes the job.

The roads are so bad your suspension files for unemployment the second you cross into town.

People in the Soo don’t slow down for potholes anymore. They just whisper “good luck everybody” and hold the steering wheel tighter.

The city motto should be:
“Sault Ste. Marie — close enough to Canada to feel international, too far from everything else to get road funding.”

But honestly, the Soo has charm. Where else can you get incredible pasties, see a 1,000-foot freighter, and lose a tire in the same afternoon?

Welcome to Sault Ste. Marie!

SAULT STE. MARIE — Costly vehicle damage caused by potholes remains a frustration for many Michigan drivers, but one Sault Ste. Scientists are still trying to explain this phenomenon, but so far there are no clear answers. A Michigan road, completely smooth, no potholes in sight, just existing peacefully like it does not know what state it is in. Drivers are approaching with caution, unsure if this is real or some kind of elaborate setup. You almost expect the ground to open up at any second just to restore balance. Because this is not something we were prepared for.

Growing up in Michigan teaches you one thing very early. Roads are not just roads, they are experiences. You learn to drive defensively, offensively, and emotionally all at the same time. Your eyes scan constantly, your reflexes stay sharp, and your car develops a personality from everything it has been through. It is not just a commute, it is a daily test of awareness.

So when you come across something like this, your brain does not immediately accept it. You slow down, not because you have to, but because you are trying to process what you are seeing. No cracks, no patches, no surprise dips trying to humble you. Just a clean stretch of road doing exactly what it is supposed to do. It feels illegal in a way that is hard to explain.

And yet, there is a quiet appreciation in the moment. You enjoy it while it lasts because you know better than to expect it forever. Somewhere out there, a pothole is preparing its comeback. But for now, Michigan is giving us a small win. And honestly, we are going to take it.
