We’ve been hiking in beautiful Telluride CO. The altitude has made it tough, but we’re slowly acclimating. We’ve done 3 hikes so far: Hope Lake, Blue Lake via Bridle Falls (the 3.3 miles after you’ve past the power house is a real slog, but the lake and wildflowers are beautiful!), and yesterday we did a 14 miler on the Sneffels Highline Trail via Deep Creek Loop. This hike was amazing, but hard. Our actual moving time was 6.5 hrs and we took one break for a protein snack before making the climb thru a scree field to the pass, and lunch at the pas, so a total of 6 hrs 54 min. The views were beautiful. Then a long 4 miles back down to Telluride proper. The highest point was 12,281 ft with a gain of ~3,800.

When hiking up here definitely plan to have a few days to climatize if you’re coming from sea level like we were.

This is the beginning of the migration for about 300 Wildebeest and some zebras. The crossing of this group took over a half hour; the wildebeest just kept coming. The splashing and mooing attracted crocodiles. It’s an extremely intense event to see and you will never look at a wildebeest or zebra in the same way again. They are survivors! The second video is about 20 minutes into the crossing. Wilderness

This video is about 20 minutes into the migration. On the left side of the screen in the water you can see a massive crocodile moving in to eat a weaker animal. This was a real eye opening event watching baby wildebeests and one baby zebra get attacked and killed by the crocodiles. Mother nature has some tough love. To see this up close changes your perspective about life around you. Wilderness

Videos of the migration are too large to upload on the slow internet so I’ll post those at a later time.

We are now in the Masai Mara in Kenya. We’ve already seen a leopard, a cheetah, and two instances of lions eating their recent kill. Today’s kill was way too graphic for us. After awhile opted to leave to see more pleasant things, like a hyena rolling in a mud hole to cool off 😎. The camps and game drives have all been unique and wonderful. Thank you Wilderness. Enjoy the highlights from the last day.

The first 4 days of our Safari have been epic! Our guide and camp have done a fabulous job. On day one from the airport to the camp we saw 10 different animals from Wildebeest and Zebras to Giraffes, warthogs, Gazelles, Topis, Elans, and more.

Day 2 was over the top with Lions, a Leopard, and a sobering reality check witnessing the great migration. About two hundred wildebeest and twenty zebras crossed the Mara River battling the crocodiles. It was overwhelming to watch. It was so loud with the animals crashing through the river, calling to each other, fighting the swift current, and dodging rocks and crocodiles. We saw 2 baby wildebeests get drowned by the crocodiles & 1 adorable baby zebra. There were about 20 trucks with guests watching and you could hear everyone reacting when the crocodile would grab the baby; especially the baby zebra. You could hear everyone gasp. Then another baby zebra crossing with its mom was struggling with the current and everyone started rooting for it, each time it went under the water you didn’t know if it was drowning or a crocodile got him; then he would pop up and everyone hoping he could make it. He gave a couple more jumps and found his footing and made it shore with his mom. Everyone cheered, we finally took a breath of relief that he made it. It was very sobering to witness nature’s process of the survival of the fittest.
Just when you thought you’ve seen it all, it couldn’t get any better, on day 3 we saw the very shy and hard to find Cheetah. Actually 2 cheetahs. They’re so beautiful!

The last day in the Serengeti we saw 2 lion mom’s, and 2 cubs eating their fresh kill. We watched for about 2 - 3 hours observing the hierarchy of who eats first among the lions and the scavengers. About 30 vultures devoured the wildebeest carcass in about 1 minute. The whole progression was shocking and fascinating. The experiences so far have been absolutely remarkable! Kudos to Wilderness who I worked with to arrange our trip. We’re now in the Ngorongoro Crater, but we’ll have to post those pics later. Here are some highlights from the last 5 days.

We are now on Day 2 of our Safari and didn’t think we’d see Cheetahs but low and behold; two Cheetah brothers lounging under a tree in the late morning. WOW!!! My favorite of the big cats! Wilderness

Following our visit to the French Basque region, we traveled to the Spanish Basque region. We enjoyed revisiting some favorite spots and hiking two stunning segments of the Camino north coastal route. Our first visit to the Basque region was 8 yrs ago. Here are some highlights.

After the Pyrenees we headed to one of our favorite small coastal towns in the French Basque region. Spent a day walking from StJean De Luz to Ibiarritz where the coastal trail ended. Spent a day driving up the coast to Bayonne and a day exploring French Basque hill towns … and revisiting some that we saw about 8 years ago. Great relaxing days. Here are some highlights. 5 days in Romania. The country is huge and driving is slow going so we were only able to explore a small area that is northwest of Bucharest.
Sights:
- [ ] Peleș Castle: The locals we spoke with all said to skip Bran Castle (Dracula’s Castle) and to definitely see Peleș (Pelesh). Peleș was amazing!
- [ ] The Fortified Churches: I think the church in Valea Viilor was most impressive.
- [ ] Sighișoara: This was my most favorite town by far.
- [ ] Brașov: 2nd favorite town
- [ ] Salania Slănic (Salt mine of Slănic) this place was amazing!! Try to be there by 9 am when they open, and not on a weekend. In summary, at the ticket line you get in a van and they drive you just about 8 minutes underground (We timed it 😁) It is 208 meters/ ~682 ft. underground. Check out the pics they don’t do it justice, but you’ll get the idea. The height of the ceiling is approximately 54 meters / ~178 feet high. The walls are sheer solid salt with veins of amber. It’s wild to walk around inside the mine.
Enjoy the pics.

Here are some highlights from our our river cruise down the southeastern Danube. The river’s highlight was passing through the Iron Gates, a narrow and deepest part with rock cliffs on each side. At the midpoint there is a break in the cliffs and there is a massive carving of the face of “ Decebalus (r. AD 87–106), the last king of Dacia, (Wikipedia)”. It’s an impressive sight in a beautiful gorge! Overall the experience was beautiful as well as educational on the history of each country and the conflicts that each country has endured from WW I, their civil war, and transition of communism. The trip was with ; The Gems of Southeastern Europe. The itinerary takes you through 5 countries: Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria & Romania. was wonderful! Super friendly staff, food was excellent, and they were very accommodating to all the different needs happening with the various guests. Their Chef’s Table is included in the price and it was a delicious 7 course meal that didn’t make you feel so stuffed you can’t move … it was perfect. We started in Budapest, but since it was our 3rd or 4th time to Budapest, we chose not to do the Budapest tour. Instead we headed to our fav spots, one of the positives of a river cruising … you can participate or take a day away from everyone. There 140 people on the boat and it didn’t feel crowded. Here are the highlights (for pics of Romania, checkout the next post). Enjoy the pics.

UnTour.Cool, Inc. was born from a unique wine import business that focused on importing ancient and unusual wine varietals to the U.S. The owner’s wine clients began to ask how they may travel to these unique places and have more access to the wineries, winemakers and their wine. The owner still organizes and chaperones one adventure per year, and each year she adds new and fun experiences to that trip. If you ever have a chance, join her on one of her adventures; it’s a great time and there’s always something new and fun happening.
