What I'm learning....
As my chronological age inches up, and especially after dealing with my husband's health challenges over the last year and a half, I have spent a little more thought than I'd like looking at my mortality. What I know for sure is there's a real difference between getting older and getting old.
For perspective, my husband, Gene, has always been one of the strongest men and the fiercest warrior I've ever met. He has always been working contractor because he loved the physical workout he gets while creating awesome structures. The physical challenges he now deals has forced a change. Making him to slow down has been a huge challenge and daily "conversations" about how to shift the way he does things are often exhausting. (Think "Groundhog Day"). Understanding the blessing of being able to slow down has been a hard one for him to embrace. Instead, forcing him to stop or even slow down has caused him to question everything about who he is and what his purpose is. All of this had been putting him in a huge funk. This is not okay!
Learning to let other people do the things he's always done is necessary but definitely not easy! So we keep working through to find the balance. We have been blessed with a great team to help with the physical side of our business and we work every day at Gene learning a new approach to preparing our business for the next stage. Every day things get a little better and we get a little closer to our goal.
What the last year and a half has shown me is the importance of staying true to who we are while learning to work within the challenges we've been dealt. To give in and give up is not an option. Do not let anyone tell you that you are too old, weak or incapable. Keep doing what you love, even if you have to learn a new way to do it. We may be getting older, but we don't need to get old. We need to live with purpose and a mission. Find the blessing in everything. Take nothing for granted, take time to breathe and do not give up! Every day is a gift, so keep living your best life.
